Someone's going to have to point out how this game was remastered. Looks like the original, plays like the original, crashes like crazy. But, hey, at least it comes with the original...
First of all, I'd like to preface my actual statement by saying that I DO think Bioshock 1 is undeniably good, great even, and that pretty much everyone should play it at least once. HOWEVER!
...I'm also of the opinion that Bioshock 2, the black sheep of the series, is MASSIVELY better in terms of sound, gameplay, variety, "feedback" (i.e. how well "the world" reacts to the player's actions) and just general "feel".
Now, the story of 2 is of course absolute bollocks, and though I'm a big fan of Augustus Sinclair, Brigid Tenenbaum, etc. as characters... the villain on the other hand, Sofia Lamb? She's probably the dumbest, most tedious freakin' twits I've ever had to endure as a "big bad" in any game ever. Seriously, Andrew Ryan was a bloody weirdo, but he at least MADE SENSE. Sofia Lamb is just a commie moron.
But still, my point stands: if you're playing Bioshock SOLELY for the gameplay, go for the second one instead of the first one. The ONLY thing #1 has that's better than #2 is the story. That's it. On all other points it's either inferior or just the same as the sequel.
I really want to give this game a higher rating but I just cant with the state that the port is in. I love what I played, and I do think that Bioshock earned its status as a masterpiece. That being said, there are so many bugs and glitches in this port that I can't recommend it to anyone on PC. A few examples would be that the game would jam whenever I opened my map in a doorway, I would have audio glitches and occasionally the game would crash and delete my saves. This is all extremely frustrating and it seems that fans have only found ways to mitigate the problem, never fix it. This is the biggest reason why you shouldn't buy this game unless you are willing to do a lot of tinkering to get it into a functional state that can run for more than an hour.
As for the game itself, the combat is fun, the worldbuilding is interesting and engaging, and the story made it hard to put the game down even after a hard crash. There is a lot to praise about the game and I cannot stress enough how much I would love to play a version that isn't marred by technical issues. If there is a breakthrough in a fan patch I will absolutely come back to play this game again
I had no idea they were coming to GOG. Insta buy!
It's just an amazing franchise - atomspheric, great story and excellent gameplay.
Do yourself a favor...buy them both!
BioShock is a horror FPS where you play as a man who was trapped in a ruined underwater city following a plane crash. Used to be a utopia, it's now overrun by murderous, insane people. You'll have access to plenty of weapons, but the unique thing is that you have access to Plasmids as well. These are potions that allow you to have powers, like telekinesis, fire, electricity, enraging enemies, and many others, but you can only equip 6 at maximum.
The underwater city of Rapture is also one of the most iconic locations in gaming. It has beautiful Art Deco aesthetics, and many weapons, items, and decorations also have that retro style. The setting is definitely the highlight of the series, and a pretty unique place for a FPS. It manages to catch that unsettling feeling of a beautiful place fallen to ruin, and its messed-up inhabitants.
This version of BioShock is the remastered version, which have better graphics and more options such as field of view. But the highlight of this version is actually the extra content, you have access to a museum of abandoned concepts, and 3 challenge rooms, 2 of them puzzle and 1 combat. There's also achievements if you play through Galaxy. These extra content are not available in the original version.
Many people seem to have complains about the game crashing, but personally I only experienced in once in this version, and maybe 2 or 3 times in Steam. I'm not sure what's really causing this, I played both versions on the same Windows 10 laptop. Just save often to be safe. That aside, if you're a fan of horror shooters BioShock is an iconic title you must play. Whether the more stable original version, or the probably unstable remaster but with extra content, give it a try!
