After 10 years, still amazing

I got BioShock Remastered during the holiday sales for $5, which is a fair price. $20 is way overpriced! Back in 2007, it was a trendsetting game with awesome graphics, surround sound and a story worthy of a movie. Now, a decade later, with improved graphics and playing it in UW-UHD (3440x1440), it can still stand up to the competition. In many review I read that the game crashes a lot, but I only had one crash on eight hours of playing. And now, on to BS 2, which I also got for $5 :)

Unstable on Windows 11 in 2024

The game will start but then crash after the cinematic completes at the beginning. Sometimes it will start and run but crash while saving. Other times it will just randomly crash. I went to the Gog support page and tried all the things listed there for solving issues. I also tried suggestions listed in the forums. No luck. I see that some people have had success with it on Windows 10 but I don't want to reinstall an older version of Windows just to run the game. I like the game. I played it when released. However, it simply isn't working for me in it's current state on Windows 11.

An Objective Review

Although ostensibly a first-person shooter BioShock is better understood as a narrative with shooting elements. The majority of the game is spent navigating the lushly decorated and labyrinthine underwater city of Rapture with its beautiful modified Gilded-Age aesthetic while the story is explained through found audio reels (a method much since abused). Hostiles can be avoided but are easily dealt with using a combination of exotic firearms and Plasmids, injections that bestow near-magical powers. Plasmids also offer a variety of ways of dealing with obstacles so you can play your way. There are choices to be made during the game which impact both the ending and in-game rewards. The game moves at a good pace, offering new and interesting places at a regular clip and interesting characters, although the end boss fight does feel trite. The remaster has improved models, better lighting, and high-resolution textures; it won’t be mistaken for a modern release but it still excellently portrays a vivid, interesting world that benefits from exploring and multiple replays.

Should have played sooner

I purchased the original game for a friend back in 2008 but didn't play it until recently. Actually, I was a bit afraid to invest myself and had trouble getting familiar with using the controller. I am no good with keyboard and mouse and Bioshock only supports XBox style controllers. Most games I played up until then was with a good old analog joystick. I played the remastered version in full glorious 4K and was instantly hooked. Learning to use the controller was much easier than I expected and the graphics of the remastered version with an RTX video card are magnificent. A variant on the 1st person shooter in a highly detailed decor and intellectual challenge along with an emotionally touching narrative makes this game a mandatory experience of the gaming genre. UPDATE : 1. I originally played Bioshock Remastered on an old i7-970 running Windows 7 (no the upgrade to Windows 10 doesn't work) equipped with RTX 2060 GPU. I have discovered the game will crash every few hours of play when using Windows 10 or 11 2. Bioshock (not remastered) is included when you buy this game. It will run fine on a Windows 7 SP1 32 bit system with 2 GB RAM and a good AGP card - I have a Radeon HD 4650 with 1 GB VRAM.

I'd Love To Give This Game Five Stars

But I can't. I'm not even going to talk about how great the game is because I have to acknowledge that you may not get to experience the game if you purchase this remaster. I got it for dirt cheap and I am still filled with regret. I wish I had had an obvious gamebreaking bug from the start so I could make an informed decision. Even ten years after its release, there are still plenty. Alas, I spent hours creeping through Rapture until I encountered the despawning spider splicer bug. After some effort, I've been unable to get the console to work, as 2K disabled it in an update, so I'm trapped in a pub and unable to progress the game. The usual methods I would use to repair an issue like this were taken away from the player. 2K maliciously sabotaged this game. Do not give them money. The original version of Bioshock isn't hard to find elsewhere.
