Fantastic story and game with a noticeable upgrade in graphics from its original.
The reason for my 4 stars however is the constant crashes after saving, which you have to do often given they only autosave between levels.
If you can stomach the crashes, you're in for a treat. Wrench runs never looked so good.
Although playable, the remaster crashed on me once and I lost progress; never had a problem with the classic. A bigger problem in the remaster was audio bugs -sometimes audio would be missing. Most or all dialogs were okay, but sometimes cutscenes and others failed. The simplest way to find out is to launch the game: some of the intro logos come with audio (most notably Nvidia's) and the very first cutscene in the game has audio too. Another bug: when entering the very first building you see a statue. For me, the statue was rendered incorrectly, recognizable as a statue but the features weren't visible. The classic version had no problems like this (although it had a few minor rendering bugs) and never crashed. The classic version does SUPPORT THE GAMEPAD, but you have to enable it first. One limitation of the classic version -you probably should keep the default resolution settings, I never could make it work with others. FIRST TIME PLAYERS should go with the classic version, otherwise you might not realize you are having these problems. I played with Intel Graphics -you might fare better with an Nvidia card. THE GAME ITSELF is awesome, a classic; a first person shooter heavy on ambience due to its story, set in an Art Deco city at the bottom of the sea, with the city and its population falling to pieces. You don't have to have read Atlas Shrugged to enjoy it, but if you have it makes it more interesting. (If you don't know what's Atlas Shrugged don't worry and play it anyway). The voice acting is really awesome at times. The game's replay value is somewhat limited unless you change the difficulty, since many events are scripted and thus predictable; but enjoyable anyway to find all the things you missed on the first run. RECOMMENDED; not perfect but comes real close.
....a technical mess.
Deinstalled this after an hour, because of a terrible sound-engine plus i can't find a way to turn off windowed mode. Those problems are well known, so why they find their way into a remaster? And no, i do not want an answer to this question.......
BioShock Remastered is the best, although not ideal means of experiencing a true gaming classic.
Not a lot needs to be said regarding the original BioShock. It is a generation defining immersive sim with a powerful visual and thematic identity. Exploring the dense Randian landscape of Rapture is a timeless delight for darker imaginations. Ken Levine and the team at 2K Boston have earned a spot in the anals of gaming history.
In regards to the remastering work done by Blind Squirrel Studios, the work is mixed. The good is that this edition comes with faithfully reworked textures, quality of life technical improvements and all of the content from previous console ports of BioShock. The bad is that the game has altered art direction and spotty stability. I would recommend watching visual comparisons on YouTube and researching the technical shortcomings on PCGamingWiki.
Despite the shortcomings, I still award BioShock Remastered a full score. The overall quality of the original experience and remastered content speak for itself.
I picked this up after completing Bioshock Infinite (yeah, I played it out of order). Between the two, I prefer Infinite as it seems to run better and has more polish.
Make sure to save often, as the game crashed on me randomly. I have about 22 hours of gameplay and it's crashed about 6 times. I also experienced a weird glitch where I saved a little sister and she just stood there, so I had to save her a second time. Also had a few weird things where solid objects clipped through NPCs. This looked strange but didn't impact the gameplay.
The game is worth getting, as it's pretty fun and has a fun twist in the story.
My purchase also included the OG (non-remastered) version of the game. I didn't see that benefit mentioned when I bought it, but it's nice to have. Maybe it doesn't crash like the remaster.
I'd rate it 5 stars if it didn't crash on me.
