Bioshock is one of those games that almost all types of gamers can enjoy. It has the depth, freedom, and narrative that "true gamers" can appreciate with enough linearity, simplicity, and fun that a "casual gamer" like myself can enjoy. With some of the best voice acting and atmosphere in any game ever made, this is a must buy.
If you've never played it, wait until your first Big Daddg fight, and you'll get what all the hype is about.
One or the greatest games ever made, now DRM free, What could be better?
Very good FPS, somehow manages to mix the best parts of old and new games. It is not a corridor shooter with time-wasting cinematics which are popular today, but has a more captivating story and a unique atmosphere which was rare back then.
GOOD
* graphics aged well (partly due to _not_ having much cinematics)
* the levels are nice to explore, not a corridor/rail shooter
* unique atmosphere, with very nice props (commercials, music, posters)
* nice voice acting (Atlas, Tenenbaum)
* spooky at places, mainly in the first few hours
* the combinations of force powers and weapons are interesting
BAD
* late game mook enemies are bullet sponges
* changing between weapon and force powers (plasmids) could be better
* character developement is clunkier than the System Shock games
* enemies are introduced skillfully, but very soon dealing with them becomes routine. The horror aspect disappears soon. Folks who don't like horror game can try it out because of this.
* the very first combo you get (electricity+wrench) is effective for the big majority of the game. Perhaps too effective.
TIP
When playing the regular version, not the re-master, add " -dx9" to the shortcut target field. This will fix the strange screen (otherwise the bottom 1/4 of the screen is cut)
At the time of writing the game is €19.99 at full price. Even though I bought it at the winter sale, I honestly think this worth full price. Solid 10-12 hours of fun.
One moment to praise GOG for their great work on bringing yet another masterpiece to their platform, the community can’t thank you more for adding this title to your store. This version of the game, however, has its ups & downs, which I will get to, but let me say what is good about this version.
The Good:
1) Graphics: I thought the graphics was amazing when I got it for my Xbox 360 back in the date,
but now, it has maintained that beautiful aesthetic & ambiance by making the game cleaner with higher resolution assets, but keeping the overall original feel of the game, very impressive.
2) Gameplay: The Balance of Combat, Stealth & Powers is nice, although I didn’t have much stealth to do in the game, but the gun play is fantastic, I really liked how smooth everything was & in combination to using powers or plasmids, it resulted in a very enjoyable experience.
3) Story: This game has a very basic choice system, the game gives you these “little sisters” where you can save or harvest them for Adam (the currency to buy powers and slots), this was very basic cause the game was clear in the direction it wanted you to take, hint: the good route, but all in all, I didn’t feel like I was just playing an empty character in a world full of things to kill. The story could have been a little more immersive, but I can’t complain.
The Bad:
If you are planning to record any content from this game, expect a lot of audio glitches, & I mean a lot, the glitches almost always happens in the hacking instances, then persists until the recording is finished. You don’t hear the glitches in game though, you only discover them in the recorded videos.
However, in conclusion, I do recommend getting this game, it is a must play & GOG is offering the OG version with this later for free, that is a hell of a deal.
