BEAUTIFUL DESOLATION is brought to you by THE BROTHERHOOD, the studio behind STASIS (Adventure game of the year 2015) and CAYNE.
Got the game for free during the 2022 summer sale. Since It had a linux port I installed it and it ran. Initially I was very impressed. This games brings forth a lot of nostalgia for us 90's kids.
The trouble is that the linux port seems to have some serious UI problems, namely part of the UI is missing. I hit a few dead ends so I decided to look up a walkthrough on YouTube. Went there and realized the person playing the game was seeing a few things I wasn't. Came here and realized even the screenshots showcase some UI elements I'm not seeing. Rebooted the game and looked over the options and the ingame help with a fine toothed comb and nothing.
Whoever did the port either never played the game so they never realized parts of it were missing or one of the many library updates that Linux is known for broke something in the few months since the game launched. Either way, trying to play it on linux pointless with the gog version. I like it, but I don't know if I'd be willing to pay for it on steam just to try it under Proton. Not with a botched linux native version.
Definitively a story based game, I LOVED the creativity, specially on the characters encountered throughout the game, some of them were particularly disturbing.
Many other positive points have been already mentioned so I'm only going to quickly summarize the reasons for withholding a star:
1. The quest format in which we have to go back and forth collecting items from an already known point A to take them to another already known point B, and then sometimes back and forth (without anything else in between such as exploration, treasure, battles, challenge, etc) has grown quite old by now, it feels time consuming and not fun. Fortunately most of the game did not feel this way, but at some points it was reduced to this.
2. I was pretty disappointed regarding a certain dialogue between an alien-like NPC and the protagonist Mark (male), in which the NPCs believes Mark to be a "female" of his own species because of his weak, "small soft -spoken words" and "pathetic vocal consummation", he gets a "poor performance" as well (quotes from the game).
Really then, that's how "feeemales" speak? The creators spent the game trying to get people to emotionally relate to their characters with all the sob stories, so at this point I found it pretty difficult NOT to relate when having my voice be called "soft" and "pathetic. It was pretty insulting.
Is not that I'm looking for this kid of thing, I have dozens of games under my belt and is the first I get this ticked off, seems like a small deal, but it is big precisely because is so backhanded.
Either way, totally worth it if you like this genera of game. ;)
This is really an exciting game, however, the Arcade is super tough. I have attempted several times and I cannot get on board with the logic of the game. You have to get through five games to get the mask to get the red lead!!!
Audio quality so poor as to sound like it is on an am radio. Unintelligible voices and static. My PC is far above specs. Drivers updated. Never encountered this before in hundreds of installed PC games. Looked for troubleshoot and found nothing here or anywhere. Is it just this bad and people ignore it?
Will gladly update review if I recieve properly requested fix from GOG or game maker.
