From original BATTLETECH/MechWarrior creator Jordan Weisman and the developers of the award-winning Shadowrun Returns series comes the next-generation of turn-based tactical 'Mech combat.
The year is 3025 and the galaxy is trapped in a cycle of perpetual war, fought by noble houses with enormous, mechanized combat vehicles called BattleMechs. Take command of your own mercenary outfit of 'Mechs and the MechWarriors that pilot them, struggling to stay afloat as you find yourself drawn into a brutal interstellar civil war. Upgrade your starfaring base of operations, negotiate mercenary contracts with feudal lords, repair and maintain your stable of aging BattleMechs, and execute devastating combat tactics to defeat your enemies on the battlefield.
COMMAND A SQUAD OF 'MECHS IN TURN-BASED COMBAT: Deploy over 30 BattleMechs in a wide variety of combinations. Use terrain, positioning, weapon selection and special abilities to outmaneuver and outplay your opponents.
MANAGE YOUR MERCENARY COMPANY: Recruit, customize, and develop unique MechWarriors. Improve and customize your dropship. As a Mercenary, travel a wide stretch of space, taking missions and managing your reputation with a variety of noble houses and local factions.
TAKE PART IN A DESPERATE CIVIL WAR: Immerse yourself in the story of a violently deposed ruler, waging a brutal war to take back her throne with the support of your ragtag mercenary company.
CUSTOMIZE YOUR 'MECHS: Use your MechLab to maintain and upgrade your units, replacing damaged weapon systems with battlefield salvage taken from fallen foes.
PVP MULTIPLAYER & SKIRMISH MODE: Customize a Lance of 'Mechs and MechWarriors to go head-to-head with your friends, compete against opponents online, or jump into single-player skirmish mode to test your strategies against the AI.
Please note:
3rd party Paradox account is needed to challenge other players in 1v1 multiplayer matches and to redeem unlock codes for Kickstarter Backer or Pre-Order DLC. Bonus decorations and emblems require online connection in order to be appliable.
Plenty of flaws (uninteresting story, no impact on the story possible, side-contracts that get repetitive fast, etc.), but the gameplay is so much fun that ultimately I've really enjoyed the game very much!
The load times are pretty bad, but it sounds like HBS will continue to improve on it. Beyond that, I'm really enjoying the combat and how each system has a role in the overall experience of the game. If you're a fan of the old MechWarrior games or BattleTech itself, I recommend you take a look.
I've played every version of Battletech I could ever get my hands on starting off with the tabletop, moving onto the pen and paper role playing, the DOS Mechwarrior games, Mechcommander, Megamek, and Mechwarrior Online just to hit the highlights. So when Battletech came to Kickstarter I totally backed it and I have to say I'm happy with the results.
It's only 4 stars for two main reasions:
- It is SLOW, even for a turn based game it can take a while to get through a turn. There are multpile "fixes" and work arounds to get it to go faster but as of right now it doesn't flow well.
- Not enough mechs! At the same time if you're not hugely versed in the Battletech universe it's not that big a deal since the lack of an Archer or what have you doesn't really hurt.
All of my issues will probably be fixed via patches, updates, and expansions but lets just say it's not perfect.
Nice Squad-Based tactics game.
Difficulty is in the "its fine" range. I'd like to have some sort of Ironman-Mode, but besides that, the overall difficulty level is absolutely in the "manageable if you think at least a tiny bit" part. Some random missions set you up against heavily overwhelming or underwhelming forces, but imho, thats part of the fun.
Story is a classic "fight the evil forces" one. Not to bad, but nothing you wouldn't have seen in Comics or Hollywood Movies.
Companions are a bit lackluster, I'd have wished for more here, considering its the same Studio that wrote the glorious Dragonfall, all of them are way to thin, character wise.
Tinkering around with different Mech loadouts is quite fun and there are multiple viable strategies to go for.
Being able to play a lot of random missions between the different parts of the Campaign is also neat, I'd would have loved to have something like this in the Shadowrun Games.
I can't complain in regards to the performance. I run it on a fairly old machine (i5 2500k, r9 280x and have no issues. The only thing that is annoying are the loading times if you install it on a HDD,t hey also increase quite a bit as you progress.
Tip: Remvong most of your old save files from the folder fixes this problem.
Its stupid and it shouldn't be this way, but it works for many people on the net.
Should you buy this?
If you like squad-based tactics, enjoy tinkering with different strategies and mechs, while constantly collecting new gear and upgrading the skills of your pilots AND you don't need a super creative story, go for it.
If you expect a deep storyline with memorable squadmates, whose outcome you can actually influence, stay away.
Its a potentially quite large game. If it hits the right spots with you, you can get a lot of hours out of your money.
I loved this game. Pretty much everything I wanted, and that's building up a unit of cool 'Mechs and stomping things with them.
I've been playing Battletech since 1987 and I know the 3025 technical readout far too well. This means I'm far from objective. The graphics are passable nothing more. The story is decent, not up to the standards of the Shadowrun series. But I still logged far too many hours on the game.
