BATTLETECH

I've never played the Battletech tabletop games, but I've read many of the books and played a lot of the classic Mechwarrior games, both the action oriented titles by Activision and the turn based Mech Commander series. I've never enjoyed the "tweaking" and building of mechs, but always enjoyed playing. I hadn't seen this on KickStarter, but when I read about, I decided to give it a shot. I purchased the title prelaunch on GoG, getting ShadowRun Returns as a pre-order bonus. I'm running the game on a 2017 15" Macbook Pro, both in native mode (OSX) and also tried in BootCamp under Windows 10. I have a fairly capable machine, though its not a gaming laptop by any means. I run the game in 1080p at "HIGH" and it runs well on OSX. I'm sure it would perform better in Windows but I can't be bothered to reboot every time I want to play. Its good enough that I am not motivated to do so, which I think is a good accomplishment for any game. The actual gameplay took some getting used to, and other than the real basics of movement, sensor locking, and attacking, the game really doesn't teach you the differences between energy weapons, missle weapons, ballistic weapons (ie autocannons) and support weapons with any rigor. It doesn't raelly teach you about armor and positioning, or about recon. The tutorial does the bare basics on teaching you the mechanics, without teaching you anything about how to really succeed in the game. The same goes for actually managing the economics as a mercenary, which is vital, nor about navigating around the galaxy - I played for a month before I realized I could actually choose where to go on the map and not just from the missions screen! I actually learned how to succeed by watching YouTube videos - thanks streamers! The gameplay itself is pretty good. Once I've learned how to play, the game has been solid. Not sure why people are having problems, but I haven't had any crashes or glitches whatsoever. Good job HBS!

I've really wanted to enjoy this game, but it's a big too slow for me - maybe I've expected it to be more like Mech Commander 1 & 2 like game (real-time instead of turn-based) but I don't know. The graphics are astonishing, I really wish there was a mod that would introduce real-time gameplay to fully like it.

BattleTech is a great game: good tactical combat, mechas punching each others, gestion of a mercenary ship, deep customization, awesome art. The combat can be a bit slow cause of delay between action but it can be tweak in the option, and the you'll need to get your head into your mechs to understand how it all works cause the game does a minimal job to explain it to you. If you come into the game with some background in Battletech lore, this game probably fills every wish you could hope from a mech strategy game. It has a nice balance of narration that is on par with the stories spanning 30 years of novels and fiction combined with an addictive mercenary company management in between the matches. Plenty enough to make the franchise's fan to look over the minor cons. Pros: - The turn-based strategy gameplay feels tactical and fun - The story is familiar Battletech style in early campaign (10 hours into the game) - Company management, mech and pilot upkeep, salvaging etc. feels addictive with a nice risk-reward balance - The atmosphere of the game is amazing thanks to visuals and music Cons: - The gameplay can feel slow and sluggish with Mechs stomping around in slow pace and grinding each other down over several rounds (but that's really what Battletech is...) - Varied missions can devolve into only blowing up all the enemies - AI feels predictable and silly at times

I have been a fan of BATTLETECH since the pencil and paper tabletop game which came with cardboard cutouts to represent Mechs. I have played almost all of the Mechwarrior releases and the board game simulators. When I saw that HairBrained Schemes had this licence again, I played their other titles in the Shadowrun series. I knew from the effort put into those games that this would be worth pre-purchasing. I bought the Digital Deluxe Edition and have not EVER been disappointed in the game. It is beautiful. It is enthralling (owners will attest to the 'just one more drop!' feel!) and most importantly it stays true and honest to the lore and the spirit of the BATTLETECH Universe. You will not be disappointed in the game and I heartily recommend that you add this one to your library TODAY!
