Nice and solid combat, good level design, thats all u need. As others say, you will feel the rush of a dark souls boss fight, the deaths, the learning and the exploits.
Controls are a bit weird, but you get used to and they have interesting variations. It's extrmely important, however, to choose your weapons carefully for every fight, keeping in mind that some give you the key to victory. Try all of the weapons at the beginning, because the game doesnt do a tutorial on this aspect and I consider it basic, given that is one of the features of the game. Once you realize about the different approaches (and choices) to the fights, its extremely enjoyable.
I bought the game a while ago and finally have time to play it, I'm liking it, control seems fine md the story it's intriguing enogh.
I'm eager to finish it
I often find souls-likes to be far too frustrating, time consuming, and lacking a story or characters that hold my interest.
Asterigos has refreshing Greek mythology inspired world with good characters and a suprisingly deep story with lots of lore.
Big pros are the art design and world building. Seriously, there is a LOT of world building if you watch all the echoes/memories and read all the documents. It's so great to find a Soulslike that doesn't lean heavily into Grim-dark, and often found myself admiring the world and character designs. The music is sweeping orchestral with some memorable themes for different areas. The voice acting is really good too and adds to the believability of the world. It made me care about Hilda and Aphes so that I wanted to keep exploring.
The combat was easy to pick up and has a good level of complexity with upgrades, skills and perks. Overall though, I find the combat fun and satisfying, rather than unfair and punishing.
The big drawback is NO MAP. You have to navigate a sprawling world but for the entire first part without fast travel you will do this BY MEMORY. I handled it because I remember a time without Maps on phones.
If you find most 3D souls-likes prioritising punishment over fun, and are getting tired of Grim-dark, Asterigos worked as an antidote for me. I sincerely hope for a sequel with an even bigger budget.
Gargantuan amounts of incredibly uninteresting dialog that the game is constantly locking you into, half of it not even voiced. I usually never skip cutscenes in video games, but this game broke me. There's just way too much storytelling, and it's the most cliché and unimaginative kind, it's baffling that someone thought a "souls-like" action game needed more cutscenes than a cinematic AAA romp, it's very irritating as you're constantly interrupted.
The combat is too easy, even on the highest difficulty setting. The staff in particular completely trivializes the game, it's a strong ranged attack with no downsides, you can lock on or free aim, unlimited use. But the enemies are so slow and predictable you can also just rush in and spam daggers. The enemy AI is very basic and they don't even flinch when you're sniping them from afar with the staff.
The level design is a bit on the "copy & paste" side, and combined with the lack of a map or even a compass, it's quite easy to get lost, because everywhere looks the same and there are no notable landmarks. The Firelink Shrine equivalent hub area is a confusing mess of copypasted rooms and hallways, good luck finding the blacksmith.
The art style is cute and the game runs well even on low end machines, but the graphics are clearly dated and there's very little vegetation and the environments tend to be cramped. Very basic lighting, the areas are either too bright or too dark with nothing interesting in-between.
Awful side quests, awful platforming. You can't retrieve your souls when you die, you just lose them permanently. The estus equivalent doesn't refresh at bonfires, you have to go out and farm/buy more flasks. Regular jogging speed is very slow forcing you to spam the sprint button constantly, there's no fast travel until much later in the game.
Overall, can't recommend. Get Kena: Bridge of Spirits instead, it's a similar but vastly better game.
