Assassin’s Creed® is a game that redefined the action-adventure genre. With photo-realistic graphics, an advanced physics model, and a nearly fanatical attention to detail, this title was able to begin a new chapter in gaming history. However, the excellent technical aspects are only half of the reason why it became so popular; the other half is the story.
While you technically play the game as Desmond Miles, the main focus of the game takes place elsewhere. The year is 1191: Jerusalem, the middle of the Third Crusade. You are a member of a mysterious order of assassins where you have trained your whole life to do one thing and one thing only – to kill. The recently growing influence of the Order of the Knights Templar disturbs the delicate balance of power in the region and therefore directly threatens The Brotherhood. The clash of the two most powerful organizations in Jerusalem at the time has the most unexpected consequences and triggers devastating events that threaten the world itself, and you – Altaïr Ibn-La'Ahad – are in the middle of all this.
Well-constructed story that will pleasantly surprise you many times along the way.
Impressive level of interaction with the environment – crowds react to what you do and act accordingly.
Open world gameplay lets you to decide how and when to achieve objectives, where to go, and gives you nearly complete freedom to get there.

I completed this game when it came out and it was an amazing experience. I can not recall it being so repetitive, it probably is, but the story is very interesting and the world looks great. 4/5
This is the game that started the franchise. It's ok overall. The story is the best part of the game while the actual gameplay is annoying and repetitive. Graphically the game is ok though. Get this on sale.
Such freedom! Such cities! Yeah, Assassin's Creed does allow for some pretty amazing free movement in huge medieval cities - as a matter of fact this particular aspect of the game holds up to this day. But it's also pretty much all the game has to offer and frankly it's just an upgrade to what you saw in the Prince of Persia games (all of which were MUCH better games than AC). Combat is dull and the stealth mechanics are ridiculous. Unlike what one might expect AC is not like Hitman set during the crusades, it's a parkour simulator with some combat thrown in. And that's just sad, especially since the scenario and story are pretty cool.
The huge problem with AC is that it provides a huge world that has nothing to offer. There's VERY few kinds of side missions (five I think) and they are so dull that you may already get bored the first time you try one of them. Climbing a tall structure and pressing a button for a nice view really isn't that awesome, Ubisoft. Neither is stabbing the exact same enemies over and over. And neither is collecting perfectly useless flags that are scattered throughout the game world. And what's worst is that not even the story missions are special in any way. They are always structured the same way: go to a place, watch a cutscene, kill the target (usually in open combat!), watch a cutscene, run away, watch another cutscene, next chapter. And "next chapter" means repeating the exact same dull side missions before you can continue the story. It doesn't help that the combat system is extremely simplistic (despite looking pretty awesome) and every enemy is fought the *exact same way*.
Ubisoft certainly learned from many of the mistakes they made in Assassin's Creed and the sequels are far less repetetive. AC2 is actually already a decent sandbox game but sadly AC1 will always remain just a tech demo with a decent story. Let's hope that eventually Ubisoft will decide to release the later and much better AC games on GOG.
A well done first episode with his flaws.
This game put the basis of all the assasin's creed saga for the better and the worse. You will explore several cities, completing mission to gather intels on your target. The mission are all the same from one city to another and ou have 9 targets. That's why people are telling this game is repetitive.
To enjoy the game, you have to force you to not check your map, and to walk randomly in the city. That way, you're enjoying the world more paying attention to details.
The combat system is interesting. Easy to learn and mastering it by working your timing. Black Spot : the enemies attack one at a time. So when there is a lot a enemies the combat is more about a game of right timed counter attack. Not very funny.
this is where the franchise started for me and remains the jewel in the crown of the franchise, sure they added much in other installments of the franchise, but focus here is the game got it right from day one,
an open world stealth game, it does have world limits but you rarely see them, the game being first of its name, focusses on a more simple ideal, you play Altaïr Ibn-La'Ahad the hero of the entire franchise and sadly only in this chapter, though the story links between games very well.
Altaïr performs all the tasks the other games show, that make this series what it is.
well written story, the arc links well and seamlessly.
personally I miss playing Altaïr, and the era he was in, Ezio was great, but for me they over used him.
everything that makes Assassin's Creed the epic game series that it is, is right here in this game, anything else is icing on the cake.
why people love AC2 and seem to hate this one is beyond me, they are both fantastic, and I really do not care because simply this is the start of it all and it was done right in the first place.
