Assassin’s Creed® is a game that redefined the action-adventure genre. With photo-realistic graphics, an advanced physics model, and a nearly fanatical attention to detail, this title was able to begin a new chapter in gaming history. However, the excellent technical aspects are only half of the reason why it became so popular; the other half is the story.
While you technically play the game as Desmond Miles, the main focus of the game takes place elsewhere. The year is 1191: Jerusalem, the middle of the Third Crusade. You are a member of a mysterious order of assassins where you have trained your whole life to do one thing and one thing only – to kill. The recently growing influence of the Order of the Knights Templar disturbs the delicate balance of power in the region and therefore directly threatens The Brotherhood. The clash of the two most powerful organizations in Jerusalem at the time has the most unexpected consequences and triggers devastating events that threaten the world itself, and you – Altaïr Ibn-La'Ahad – are in the middle of all this.
Well-constructed story that will pleasantly surprise you many times along the way.
Impressive level of interaction with the environment – crowds react to what you do and act accordingly.
Open world gameplay lets you to decide how and when to achieve objectives, where to go, and gives you nearly complete freedom to get there.

I played this game twice, once on my xbox and again on steam. I think that this game has its several flaws but this was the first Assassin's Creed game. This game was a start to one of my favorite series, and if you want a good Assassin's Creed game then play Black Flag or Assassin's Creed 2.
I finished this game (on GOG) back in January but forgot to write a review. I enjoyed the game when it came out, and enjoyed re-playing it on GOG! I really like the setting and am a fan of hunt & stealth gameplay - like in Hitman, Deus Ex, and other games. Even after 8+ years this game looks good and plays great!!
I am a fan of this and the first couple Assassin's Creed games only. I am somwhat interested in Origins (the next installment in the series) but it will probably be a few years until it's on GOG!
I know most people, including myself, love the following games better as the developer found their footing but I have found this time period thoroughly fleshed out and exciting. I think Ubisoft should go back to this time period. The eternal battle with the Templars who were officially around from 1119 to 1312. I want to see more of the crusades and the knights and assassins battling but alas, this is only Assassin's Creed in that time period. For that alone, I give this 5 stars where it might have been a 3.4-4 star game.
I got this game for about 10 dollars some time back. The text on the back of the box made me curious.
Starting the game was exciting: the role of an assassin, the sci-fi setting on the side, game mechanics looked and felt promising.
At first, I had some very satisfying moments when assassinating a victim was smoothly executed and the escape was perfectly achieved, no long chasses or fights. The fights were brutal and tactical even with some needed effort when parrying.
All this didn't stick, though. I agree with the other reviewers, it becomes stale very quickly. After about 1/3 or 1/4th of the game I got bored.
Initially I was making a point of getting all the information on a subject, that is, I got all points of investigation done. It felt unnecessary very soon. It was enough to get the first two or three bits. It would have been interesting if all intelligence actually got you somewhere in how you tackle the mission.
The side missions, citizen rescues, were the same every time. The flag collecting for extra content - I guess - became a nuisance, one seemed impossible to reach. The user interface felt clumsy, not smooth and helpful. The game just didn't manage to keep me hooked.
The game idea is intriguing and exciting, execution is mediocre. I didn't last through the game, never finished it. AC2 is supposed to have eliminated the flaws, at least that's what gamers say about it.
I might not get approval from many people but I find this game, to be among the most overrated games ever made. The background story is great, but the game itself feels like a job on a assembly chain in a manufacture ... the same thing 1000s of times over and over and over ...
