Assassin’s Creed® is a game that redefined the action-adventure genre. With photo-realistic graphics, an advanced physics model, and a nearly fanatical attention to detail, this title was able to begin a new chapter in gaming history. However, the excellent technical aspects are only half of the reason why it became so popular; the other half is the story.
While you technically play the game as Desmond Miles, the main focus of the game takes place elsewhere. The year is 1191: Jerusalem, the middle of the Third Crusade. You are a member of a mysterious order of assassins where you have trained your whole life to do one thing and one thing only – to kill. The recently growing influence of the Order of the Knights Templar disturbs the delicate balance of power in the region and therefore directly threatens The Brotherhood. The clash of the two most powerful organizations in Jerusalem at the time has the most unexpected consequences and triggers devastating events that threaten the world itself, and you – Altaïr Ibn-La'Ahad – are in the middle of all this.
Well-constructed story that will pleasantly surprise you many times along the way.
Impressive level of interaction with the environment – crowds react to what you do and act accordingly.
Open world gameplay lets you to decide how and when to achieve objectives, where to go, and gives you nearly complete freedom to get there.

Its a must play game, unless your a gaming hipster, you'll enjoy this game. I don't really need to repeat what the game is about but it has a very interesting story line of betrayal and honor. A world of where Templars are at a secret war with Assassins. However the Templars are the bad guys which to me is a refreshing change of pace where religious fanatics in the past seemed to be the heros.
My rating is not for the game itself- it's for how the game should be played.
To begin, the game's mechanics are average-good for its time. The fighting is... Well, it feels like clubbing a baby seal sometimes, and like fighting a rhino using only a toothpick other times.
The plot and feel of the game get repetitive after a few missions, and things start to get stale if you play the game like it is presented. However...
Enter "just for fun" land in AC1, and it has a new lease on life. No longer are you saving citizens only to have them thank you in annoying voices. No longer are you performing a "by the numbers" assassination on every random person you meet. Take Altair's life into your own hands: tackle civilians into food stands, use enemy archers to slay your enemies, or tick off 20 guards before luring them to the top of a building and bopping them off cartoon style. Tackle archers off of tall buildings. Beat up your assassin friends until they die. Use throwing knives on assassination targets and watch Altair fly over to them and stab them in the neck afterwards! Stab those saved citizens around Acre in the gut, like their voice deserves!
In short, have fun with it. Mess around with the mechanics, look for random glitches (tackling people near a raised surface- they go flying!), and just do whatever is most pleasing at any given moment. Take it slow, play in snippets and remember, no one is innocent.
Never have I felt as cheated, as when I bought AC some years back. Basically you keep playing the same mission over and over for 10-20 hours to unlock maybe 10 minutes of real storyline.
Absolutely despicable... Would not recommend this to anyone.
The idea behind Assassin's Creed is a great one; survey the area, investigate your assassination target, and then finally go in for the kill. Unfortunately, the execution of this idea is not as good as it could have been. While fun the for the first half of the game, the investigation missions soon become repetitive, and you wish that the game would just cut to the chase. However, Assassin's Creed is a beautiful game that still looks great today, more than five years after its original release on April 8, 2008. The three cities in the game - Damascus, Acre, and Jerusalem - are absolutely massive and really come alive with around 45,000 fully rendered NPCs each, and I'll never forget seeing Jerusalem for the first time, or climbing the tallest building in the game. Unfortunately, the area connecting these cities isn't nearly as exciting.
