Description
The Swine are Rising!
In 2010 Frictional Games terrified the world with the cult horror Amnesia: A Dark Descent. Now they bring you a new nightmare. Created in collaboration with The Chinese Room, the studio behind Dear Esther, Amnesia: A Machine for Pigs is an intense and terrifying journey into the heart of darkness that lurks within us all.

The year is 1899
Wealthy industrialist Oswald Mandus awakes in his bed, wracked with fever and haunted by dreams of a dark and hellish engine. Tortured by visions of a disastrous expedition to Mexico, broken on the failing dreams of an industrial utopia, wracked with guilt and tropical disease, he wakes into a nightmare. The house is silent, the ground beneath him shaking at the will of some infernal machine: all he knows is that his children are in grave peril, and it is up to him to save them.

Step back into the horror
Like The Dark Descent, this is a game driven by its story, exploration of the world and the constant fear of the unknown. You can expect classic Amnesia gameplay, physics interaction and the signature blend of high-end gaming with low system requirements.

Think you understand fear? Think again.
A Machine for Pigs takes both the world of Amnesia and the technology of The Dark Descent to new heights of horror. Built using an updated version of HPL2 engine, the game features stunning visual and environment design, incredible music and audio effects and adapted artificial intelligence. These are all driven by a gut-wrenching, blood-curdling new story, set sixty years after the events of the original game.
  • Unique game created in collaboration between two independent game companies famous for exploring the outer reaches of what games can be. Fresh and new approach to the Amnesia world while staying true to its origins.
  • Unique physics interaction that has been developed and improved since 2005.
  • Exceptional artwork and environments that run on low system specifications.
  • The darkest, most horrific tale ever told in a videogame. Stunning soundtrack by award-winning composer Jessica Curry.

Unconventionally Brilliant

Though Not exactly a sequel in terms of play style, but a different and more literary kind of horror game. I found it more frightening and disturbing than the original overall because the story seemed more inspired, suspenseful and ultimately more truly tragic and horrifying. A thought provoking reflection on the birth of industrial age and its consequences for society as a whole. The atmosphere was beautifully constructed and very immersive. I'd recommend it to anyone who likes horror that goes deeper than pop out scares and is subtly chilling in a way that lingers and haunts your dreams.

Exceeded all expectations

What A Machine for Pigs does better than it's predecessor is immersion and atmosphere. There is nothing in this game that will pull you out of "the zone". The difficulty is perfectly balanced so that progress isn't glaringly simple nor frustratingly unforgiving. The elements of health display, the sanity system, and even the inventory of the first game and all discarded. I feel that, in order for the main focus to be the horrifying story the game tells, removing anything that stands between the user and the in game universe is the best option. Nothing screams "HEY REMEMBER THIS IS JUST A GAME!?" like navigating a menu or interface of some sort. This is a horrific ride through the darkest places of the human condition. Where The Dark Descent made you afraid of the monsters, the scariest thing in A Machine for Pigs is the slow realization of what characters are driven to do. I recommend playing the game as I did: block 6 continuous hours out of your day, throw blankets over the windows, lock the door, turn off your phone, strap on headphones, crank the volume to the max, have plenty of your favorite chemical on hand (caffeine, alcohol, or...what have you), and take your time to fully explore a certain machine, alone and in the dark.

What is it?

A game without a challenge is not a game. Is it a wallking simulator, is it a game...I don't know. I would give it a 6/10

Boring linear Indie Horror

Gameplay : 1/5 You have literally nothing to do. No health bar, no inventory, no resource management, no platforming, etc. The game lacks every component an horror adventure should have. Of course you also have no weapons to fight your enemies. it is just a glorified walking simulator. Also the levels are totally linear, nothing to explore. Music : 2/5 The music is creepy and makes you feel uneasy. So it does it job. But it is too loud and they overuse it. The whole game you are tormented with the "danger music". Which makes you believe that the next jumpscare or enemy is just about to happen. Unfortunately it gets old really fast, and then it is just annoying. Atmosphere : 3/5 The only saving grace for this game. Its atmosphere is dense and creates a horrifing world that you just want to escape somehow. Graphics : 2/5 The game shows that it had a limited budget. Outdated graphics and poor visual effects. It is still okay for an Indie game. The enemies : 1/5 Often time these horror games have frightening foes, that will stay in your memory for long. The alien in Alien : Isolation, or the Nemesis in Resident Evil games. In this case, your enemy is a mutated walking pig! It is not scary, its A.I. is horrendous and it poses no threat at all. It is just annoying and you wish you could just kill it to end its misery and spare you all the annoying future encounters. Story: 1/5 unfortunately the story is also dull and boring. Presented only in form of letters and diary entries you couldnt care less. For me it was pretty annoying to read a whole page of cryptical nonsense. I just left the letters on the ground after a while because i didn t wanted to be bothered to read a long text again. Some dumbed down frankenstein story about creating pighumans. Price : 1/5 Sorry the price is too high, only get this Indie game if its on sale for less than 5 euros.
