Description
Includes Jack in the Dark bonus adventure

A suspicious suicide. A chilling curse. A malevolent power. Finally, a wicked dark secret. This is Derceto, a legendary Louisiana mansion where, against your better judgment, you're drawn into a world of shadows to explore the darker side of Jeremy Hartwood's imagination.

Despite a paralyzing sense of personal danger, your quest for truth drives you to investigate the old house. But, you didn't know that, by entering Derceto, you'll be plunged into the daily nightmare that was Jeremy Hartwood's life. You weren't prepared for the torturous howls that resound from deep within its halls. You didn’t foresee the shadowy corridors that seemingly have no end. You couldn't anticipate the brooding, gloom-filled rooms, the pervasive weight of dread, the heavy sense of evil that gills the atmosphere and the very house itself.

Had you known, you might have refused this task. But alas, you accepted, and now you must make your way through this spine-tingling adventure alone... and in the dark.

The First Revival Horror Game

Despite this is the first 3D survival-horror game ever developed, it's not about being the first but also doing it in an excellent way. The voices, music, textures, story, make this game a must have for everyone who is serious about this genre. Please note this version is working perfect in both Windows 8 and 10. This is the original trilogy, not to be compared with the rest of the games with the same game that were developed after. Note that you get all the goodies, and GOG made a beautiful work there. I totally recommend buying these 3 games for the price of almost nothing. I want to say there was a cropped newspaper for the Alone in the Dark 2. I sent an email to GOG and they re-scanned it in a couple hours: Amazing support!

Unique experience

First played this in the nineties. To be honest: controls and playability were low-class even then. Graphics were ok (backdrops) or not so (polygons). So why five stars? This is one of the very few, if not the only title that I have played, where ONE enemy, and a slowly moving one, can and will cause true horror and panic. The atmosphere is incredible. You will be afraid. You will panic. You will be afraid of dying again. Lovecraftian references are there and fit the story. Music is complementing the scenes and action very nicely. Long story short: if you can endure the controls, and prefer atmosphere over graphics, get this jewel, you won’t regret it.

So nostalgic

A survival horror video game series, originally developed by Infogrames. In most of the games, the player controls private investigator Edward Carnby, who goes to investigate a haunted mansion or town that is full of undead creatures. Alone in the dark is the grandfather of resident evil

Wonderful difficulty/Unflatteringly aged

Unfortunately, I did not have the opportunity to play this game upon its release or shortly thereafter, so there is no nostalgia helping to mask some difficulties I faced when trying to get into the game. To complain about the game's graphics seems unfair given the time of its release, but I feel as though there were many other approaches the developers could have taken with the design rather than opting for low-polygon '3D' figures. Where epic games like Quest for Glory and Ultima VII can be returned to again and again, I find that the graphics in AITD are just too hard to get behind, much like the late 90s and early 2000s attempts at 3D. Of course these are all part of the evolution of gaming, but it does detract from the replayability of AITD all these years later. The controls are clunky, but perhaps no worse than Resident Evil, so that is perhaps not a critique in itself. The redeeming factor of AITD is that it is so damn hard and legitimately frightening at times. It is very unforgiving in a way that Silent Hill and RE can't even compete with, which is definitely a point in its favour!

Landmark Game

Alone in the Dark, when it came out, was one of those games that others attempted, and typically failed to emulate. An early survival horror game that combined Lovecraftian horror with action. The pacing, and style of the original game are nothing short of fantastic. It may take you a moment to get into the swing of the controls but it's worth it. Unfortunately, the later games in the series never quite measured up to the first, but it's worth buying just to play the first in the series.
