Description
Includes Jack in the Dark bonus adventure

A suspicious suicide. A chilling curse. A malevolent power. Finally, a wicked dark secret. This is Derceto, a legendary Louisiana mansion where, against your better judgment, you're drawn into a world of shadows to explore the darker side of Jeremy Hartwood's imagination.

Despite a paralyzing sense of personal danger, your quest for truth drives you to investigate the old house. But, you didn't know that, by entering Derceto, you'll be plunged into the daily nightmare that was Jeremy Hartwood's life. You weren't prepared for the torturous howls that resound from deep within its halls. You didn’t foresee the shadowy corridors that seemingly have no end. You couldn't anticipate the brooding, gloom-filled rooms, the pervasive weight of dread, the heavy sense of evil that gills the atmosphere and the very house itself.

Had you known, you might have refused this task. But alas, you accepted, and now you must make your way through this spine-tingling adventure alone... and in the dark.

Don't you buy it

The first game has a bug in the final room, after put the talisman in the altar if you leave the room and then comeback, the damn three can't be destroyed by the lamp. I don't know if this is a problem from GOG or from the publisher, but i payed for the game to work, so download the ps1 version and play it on your best emulator

Pretty bad.

I love old games. I love Old School fixed angles survival horror games and I don't care for graphics that much. the reason I give this game only 2 stars is because it plays horribly. I would argue that it never was a good game to begin with. I am sure people struggled with the controls in 1992 as they are today. You see, certain games just work. Wing Commander, Resident Evil, Doom, System Shock, you name it. If it works, it works. AitD does not. I can't play this game. I tried, I really tried. Double click for running (does not work), so you are slow as a snail all of the time. And the worst, the worst, the combat. It feels like tossing a coin. You have to press fight in a certain moment or the enemy will hit you first and your hit-animation will take too long so you can't counter untill your are hit again. Then I find a Saber, I think okay, now the game is a bit better maybe - but nooooo. After 4 Hits the saber breaks and I get killed again. WHAAAAAT!? I love old games, I am not a spoiled person who can't get into the good old games anymore - the opposite is the case. I like polygons, pixels and challenges. AitD just sucks and is unplayable. Any good review is mostly nostalgia or maybe I just can't play this game unlike others, I dunno. Purchase only if you "collect" classics like myself. And finally: Yes, I see now how much Resident Evil ripped off AitD. How insincere of Capcom to deny that. So if you are curious too see the origin like myself: buy on sale. But don't expect a playable game.

Like Resident Evil?

I played this game because I read that it was an influence of the survival horror genre that I got into playing Resident Evil. All in all, it's an interesting game that has many of the same ideas or features as Resident Evil, but it lacks the "total package" that made RE games so special and really launched the survival horror genre. In fact, even those things that it did first, Alone in the Dark does not do well at all. The combat (if you can even call it that) is absolutely horrible; do not expect hit detection to be accurate or gameplay to be fluid or intuitive in any way. The controls are much worse than Resident Evil (which is also clunky and bad) and you will be hit by bullets that you never see and killed by unexplained dangers that happen off-screen. It's a frustrating mess. The only good thing about Alone in the Dark is that the puzzles are a little better than the lame fetch quest garbage in Resident Evil, and the story is of much higher caliber (based on H.P. Lovecraft stuff if you care). Unfortunately, none of that makes the game any more enjoyable to actually play, and it's mostly just a matter of lumbering your way through it and getting lucky. If you decide to attempt playing, I would recommend a walkthrough to get you past the parts where you will get insta-killed from dangers that lurk off-screen. Because nobody likes that.

Graphics...

The main problem for me, is that the shabby graphics pull me away from any real story line, sadly.
