Description
Includes Jack in the Dark bonus adventure

A suspicious suicide. A chilling curse. A malevolent power. Finally, a wicked dark secret. This is Derceto, a legendary Louisiana mansion where, against your better judgment, you're drawn into a world of shadows to explore the darker side of Jeremy Hartwood's imagination.

Despite a paralyzing sense of personal danger, your quest for truth drives you to investigate the old house. But, you didn't know that, by entering Derceto, you'll be plunged into the daily nightmare that was Jeremy Hartwood's life. You weren't prepared for the torturous howls that resound from deep within its halls. You didn’t foresee the shadowy corridors that seemingly have no end. You couldn't anticipate the brooding, gloom-filled rooms, the pervasive weight of dread, the heavy sense of evil that gills the atmosphere and the very house itself.

Had you known, you might have refused this task. But alas, you accepted, and now you must make your way through this spine-tingling adventure alone... and in the dark.

It Stands Alone

This game defined what the PC was really all about. Never, not on consoles or any other device, has there been a classic game that unsettled you with such a lonely, dark atmosphere as this diamond did. I’ve been waiting a long time for GOG to release it, and here it is. How many times did you jump out of your seat? How many times did you panic when that thing tried to break down the door on you? Go ahead...enter the seemingly quiet room. Edward Carnby, a character who could have gone on to see many a great case in the supernatural, is the hero of the day as he goes up against forces beyond his imagining. Using only his fists and a sweet shotgun, you skulk about the creepy silence of Derceto. Combining the best parts of the adventure genre with third-person action, it spawned an entire genre that continues to thrive today. Pick this game up. You will never regret your purchase, and surely you’ll come to appreciate what they were able to accomplish back when gameplay was still number one.

Opened a whole new genre

Alone in the dark is one of the most ancient survival horror games out there - It became an inspiration for Resident Evil series, Silent Hill Series and it's spin-offs. The first game from the series was heavily inspired by Cthulu mythos and it shows - creepy atmosphere, a large eerie mansion, and monsters of Lovercraftian origin. The game is long and challenging but in the long run - a great adventure. The second one takes us to deal with an ancient curse and a ghost pirate and his crew. It's a bit more goofy than the last one, but regardless it's still good. The third one is based mostly on Indian mythos, setting it in a semi-Wild West setting. Out of the 3, I'd say the first one is the hardest and the best one. The next two are just the series getting a bit older. Don't think they're not fun, because they are. But you can tell that ATID was getting too hermetic with it's engine. I've been talking about the pros - atmosphere, good writing and good amount of gameplay. Now the cons - controls and camera angles. Any fan of the early survivor horror genre knows that fighting a monster in those games is hard as hell - switching camera angles and tank controls make it almost impossible to take a good aim. Still for 6 bucks it's worth it. 3 good games for 2 dollars each is too good of a deal to pass through. The only shame - the rare AITD3 comic book isn't included.

CHILDHOOD HORRORS

My god, one of my most memorable games from my childhood. I remember playing this with my mom, my friends, everyone, as long as I wasn't playing by myself. Most people will think Resident Evil gave birth to this genre. They are wrong. This game started it all. This game gave birth to all the zombie and horror games we see today. This game started the genre. Talk about a defining game, this is it. What a memorable game and I'm so glad GOG is offering it so I can recall some of my memorable childhood memories.

A hot mess on the third adventure

Alone in The Dark 1 and 2 in this collection are flawless, and this review does not count for them. Unfortunately Alone in The Dark as seen in this package is a hot mess. For some reason rather than using the third disc from the original trilogy release they used a budget version from the UK which had the voice acting and music replaced with inferior versions. The game is meant to close with an awesome western rock number, but this version has the song replaced with a muddled garbled version with incomprehensible vocals. It makes no sense at all why it would be as such, as the first two games are the perfect originals.

Classic that didn't age well

I had never played this game back when it came out or clsoe after, only heared about it. "Alone in the Dark" was one of those titles that always had this mysterious air around them for me, never fully knowing what it was about, but realizing it would scare the beejebus out of me. Now, all these years later, I decided to clear away the mists surrounding this title, buy this game and start playing. I can see why it made an impact on players back in the day. Eerie atmosphere, great story-telling, but... today very little of that lingers. The story still stands of course, but you need some kind of immersion, definitely in a story that's supposed to scare you. Here the bad graphics are a game-breaker. I know the game was made in another day and age, it's part of GOG-experience to not mind graphics too much, but in this case it's off-putting. Your own characters pixelated face looks scarier than the monsters he faces. Gameplay wise the controls are easy enough to get used to, but the "spinnig 360 degrees and then moving"-thing does make thie thing more bothersome than it could be. I'm glad I gave it a try, I'm sorry I didn't do it much earlier. This game is good for those who played it before on a nostalgia-trip, and for videogame archeologists. But don't expect an immersing game if you're new to it.
