You are born falling from orbit, a new mind in a body once occupied by the Changing God, a being who has cheated death for millennia. If you survive, your journey through the Ninth World will only get stranger… and deadlier.

With a host of strange companions – whose motives and goals may help or harm you – you must escape an ancient, unstoppable creature called the Sorrow and answer the question that defines your existence: What does one life matter?

Torment: Tides of Numenera is the thematic successor to Planescape: Torment, one of the most critically acclaimed and beloved role-playing games of all time. Torment: Tides of Numenera is a single-player, isometric, narrative-driven role-playing game set in Monte Cook’s Numenera universe, and brought to you by the creative team behind Planescape: Torment and the award-winning Wasteland 2.
  • A Deep, Thematically Satisfying Story. The philosophical underpinnings of Torment drive the game, both mechanically and narratively. Your words, choices, and actions are your primary weapons.
  • A World Unlike Any Other. Journey across the Ninth World, a fantastic, original setting, with awe-inspiring visuals, offbeat and unpredictable items to use in and out of battle, and stunning feats of magic. Powered by technology used in the award-winning Pillars of Eternity by Obsidian Entertainment, the Numenera setting by Monte Cook provides endless wonders and impossibly imaginative locations for you to explore.
  • A Rich, Personal Narrative. Thoughtful and character-driven, the story is epic in feel but deeply personal in substance, with nontraditional characters and companions whose motivations and desires shape their actions throughout the game.
  • Reactivity, Replayability, and the Tides. Your choices matter, and morality in the Ninth World is not a simple matter of “right” and “wrong”. You will decide the fates of those around you, and characters will react to your decisions and reputation. The result is a deeply replayable experience that arises naturally from your actions throughout the game.
  • A New Take on Combat. With the Crisis system, combat is more than just bashing your enemies. Plan your way through hand-crafted set-pieces which combine battles with environmental puzzles, social interaction, stealth, and more.

Disappointment

Played through the game completely in over 150 hours. I think the game is very lacking, even though it has some interesting ideas. Buy it only on sale or avoid completely, better play PST or BG2 again. And, yeah, I backed it. It feels as though the devs had no idea what to do with the game or which direction to take, game feels unfinished. Pros: - interesting setting, some interesting locations; - interesting writing at times; - good use of character skills in dialogues; - pretty art. Cons: - never explained what the main force (that supposedly was the reason for this entire game) was. There are hints as to what the Tides are, but they are so minimal, that you can slap any name on them for the same effect. Consequently, the main story feels forced and incoherent; - the writing is interesting only at times, for the rest of the game, it's just an endless discussion of some topics, which most of the time feels out of place, disconnected or boring; - your choices don't matter one bit: I understand that in the finale you can choose any option despite your choices for the entire game and you can go with it. What is the reason then for having the entire game before the finale? - the companions are bland. Some of their background is interesting, but the spacing of quests is so bad that you forget anything about them since the previous leg of the quest. You can't talk much with them, they have very few reactions to events in the game; - poor character and combat systems, the combat feels as one huge, incoherent mess. You are better off solving all the quests through talking just to avoid combat, but then, there are also quite a few of encounters, which you cannot avoid; - the inventory system is bland, no memorable items or their descriptions, the use of items is more of a chore than something that feels intuitive; - no replay value; - having finished the game, I can't think of any quest, which was memorable. They all were okish, but nothing more than that.

A unique world unlike any other

Tides of Numenera to my mind succeeds in spades at being a spiritual successor to Planescape : Torment. Both of these games are absolute anachronisms to the industry that surrounds them. I am willing to wager a good amount that Tides of Numenera is one of the most imaginative pieces of science fiction in recent memory, a standout piece of art that has no place in a medium filled with unabashed imitation and lack of imagination. Quite frankly, there are few other games like Tides of Numenera (except for P:T). The Ninth World is a humbling achievement of imagination and science fiction. Quite frequently I am left lost for words at some of the concepts broached and ideas represented in this game. I have yet to see another title with such little regard for the common tropes that pervade science fiction and fantasy in most mediums. Tides of Numenera succeeded in immersing me completely in the Ninth World, making me care deeply for its characters, gasp in wonder at its sights, and ponder deeply at the artifacts and Numenera and other wondrous things that it continually offered up to me. I'm just about done with my first playthrough and I cannot wait to start another one.

Review from a Kickstarter Backer

I backed the Kickstarter at a tier that got me a physical collector's edition. The physical goods were disappointing, but not the game. I think you will find this game rewarding, providing you are interested in the story, and want to build your character such that you solve everything with dialogue and avoid combat. This game does NOT have anything to do with Planescape: Torment. I knew that when I backed it, and I am not disappointed. Planescape: Torment is the better game; deeper in every way, and with a more satisfying ending. I feel Torment: Tides of Numenera takes longer to pull you into the story and world, but it is still worth it, and I hope there will be more games like this! I played a Strong-willed Nano who Brandishes a Silver Tongue, and focused on everything that gives me dialogue options. I ended the game in less than 35hrs with a Gold Dominant Tide (Blue was my second, and Indigo my distant third tide) and Legacy of Guardian. I also completed my companions' (Aligern, Matkina, and Rhin) side quests, Rhin's being the most satisfying. I think the creators of this game primarily focused on making it rewarding for my specific play style. However, the dialogue is a bit transparent, and doesn't have as big as impact on the world as expected. Basically, there are only 3 things that contribute to your ending. Your tide, your relationship to other characters, and your decision at the end game. Unfortunately, if you prefer combat, or playing more disreputable characters, it probably won't be as enjoyable. If playing a pacifist do-gooder appeals to you, I think you will enjoy it. ...and I would be excited to back a second game!
