It's still a mess after a year
I played about 2/3rds of the game at launch and decided to put it down and give it some more time in the oven. 12 months on and there seems to have been work done to add back A-life, but I still can't stand to play for long. Unless a miracle happens, at GSC's current pace and considering what issues they seem to be prioritizing, I don't see things getting significantly better until after at least another year of patches. The performance is still terrible and likely will be until the Unreal update that was supposed to come out by the end of this year. As of writing, they have a month to finish that without missing their deadline. They also removed the option to play without upscaling, so I hope you like that hideous blurry DLSS shimmer. But what's really irritating is that there's a few simple issues that plague almost every second of the game that really should've been fixed a week after launch. The game STILL has horizontal sensitivity much higher than vertical sensitivity, so every time you need to look up or down it feels like dragging your mouse through a mile of mud. This is just completely unacceptable for a modern PC game. It's like not having an FOV slider. There is STILL an obnoxious vignette when you sneak, and an annoying effect when you're being irradiated where white static appears at the edges of the screen. There's also STILL an annoying unimmersive sound effect that plays when you get a headshot, even from a hundred meters away. All of these things should've been toggles. There are mods to get rid of them but of course they break every update. Worst of all, you STILL cannot properly rebind your quickslot hotkeys to not require holding them down. It's such a minor thing but it's so, so, SO aggravating to have this degree of console-itis still present in what was supposed to be a premium PC experience an entire year on. I just want to be able to bind medkits, bandages, energy drinks and antirad to F1 through F4, why can I STILL only use two keys for this? Ridiculous. Updates have been focused on working on A-Life and fixing questbreaking bugs, and that's all well and good, but the core problems with overabundant loot and bullet-sponginess have not been addressed. GSC (and even most modders, it seems) still don't realize that mutants aren't supposed to have armor, meaning hollowpoints and buckshot are almost totally worthless. Guns are still unimmersively "tiered" so two weapons firing the same caliber will do vastly different damage depending on how GSC arbitrarily decided to rank them, because progression or something. Yes, this was in SoC too, but it wasn't THIS bad. Worst of all, there's been no progress on reimplementing any of the cut content, i.e. side quests. Pretty much every region aside from Zalissya and Garbage have next to no side content, and randomized barkeeper missions can only be done once every three days. I'm still thrilled to have a fully open-world Zone, but there's nothing to do in it beyond the very on-rails main quest with its overproduced cutscenes. 1.7 has added Master difficulty. I wish I knew what it changed because the game doesn't tell you and all anyone talks about is how annoying its forced checkpoint-save system is. Supposedly the damage model was changed to make the player and enemies do roughly equal damage, which is what everyone wanted in the first place, But I fought a few bandits, dumped half a mag from an MP5 into one guy's chest and he was still standing. Meanwhile I got killed in a handful of shots from a Makarov, so even if it's better than it was, it's still not good. Furthermore, after firing two mags from said MP5, it went from 100% durability down to about 70%, which is just downright silly. You can read up on the current state of A-Life elsewhere. It really does seem to have come a long way, and kudos to GSC for that. But aside from that, I'd really prefer that the devs focus on actual problems within the game instead of wasting dev time adding nonsense no one asked for, like a wobbly camera effect in the event that the player chugs too many energy drinks. The game is also still missing the AN-94 and F2000, which is unforgivable. Would love to update this review with a better rating one day, but it's still just not worth it at the moment.
Hilft dir das weiter?
