Actually not very good
Metal Fatigue is one of those games that blew me away when it was new. It had fantastic graphics at the time. It is riddled with cool features. The map has three layers - underground, ground and "sky" (or something like that) - that require different kinds of units. It has possibly the first instance of air combat in an RTS that looks great. There's customizable mechs that can engage in melee combat with (at the time) great animations and mech crews that gain experience. You can damage hostile mechs and then steal a body part of theirs, bring it home and attach it to your own mech. It sounds really awesome on paper. However, this stuff does not really add up to anything great and the whole thing can be described as a poor man's Total Annihilation. There's no particular depth to it, the factions don't differ much, the game is very slow and the enemy tends to rebuild his base on a layer you already cleared out before. Especially the underground layer, where visibility is limited and your mechs can't enter, is very boring to fight in and the place where the enemies tend to hide like cockroaches. It doesn't help that there's infinite resource that regenerate slowly, however, so the game can drag on forever and come to a crawl. Whenever I feel like firing this one up again and wonder "why did I never finish it? it was awesome!" I remember that it's just darn boring and I usually give up by the third mission. I still have a soft spot for the game if only for the many unique ideas it had. If, like me, you are sentimental when it comes to games from that era, especially RTS games, you should definitely give it a try but don't expect another Warzone 2100 or Earth 2150.

Fun RTS with a story
I played this game when I was a kid, and it has aged fairly well. Summarized, this is an RTS with unique and well implemented game mechanics and a surprisingly good campaign storyline. As with many games that came out between 1999-2003, the 3D effects can be tricky to get working on modern systems. As such, this version is THE version to get- five minutes after paying, I was in the game. No hiccups, no extra installs, and no settings to mess with (Win10). This version has six resolutions to pick from, topping out at 1600x1200. One thing to note: when you change resolutions, the game restarts. No warning, and if you change mid-game it does not save your progress. TL;DR: A solid RTS with a good storyline and mechanics I've never seen anywhere else. And GOG's version works without headaches and doesn't cost you $100 like the copies on Ebay.

Worth it
It works better than it used to, the sound actually works for once Worth the price just for not having me go through the hassle of getting nglide Only issue i have with it is that the UI still doesn't really scale with resolution properly, and only 800x600 is readable

A blast from the past
I loved this game and still do. It has a few design flaws with it's 3 layer battleground concept not always being utilized as well, as one would have thought. However, this is still a VERY solid game, which I have tried on numerous occasions to work on a modern pc, but to no avail. Still have the original box on the shelf! The 3 very dinstinctive and approachable factions, the mech combat based on components and the solid RTS base building makes it a no-brainer 5-star game. Thanks for bringing my childhood back.
