Back when it was released, Infernal Machine was labeled as "another Tomb Raider clone" and reviewers didn't see further than that.
While it is true that the game shares many mechanics and gameplay elements, it still has a personality of its own and does feel like a proper Indiana Jones adventure.
The plot, while not as inspired as that from other Indy games, is nicely told in real time cutscenes, that not only show up at the beggining of a level, but whenever something of importance happens.
Indy himself often voices his own thoughts out loud, giving clues as to what to do or providing some humour, like when he's expressing his frustration with the cryptical nature of some inscriptions.
Voiced again by Doug Lee from Fate of Atlantis, and being directed and written by Hal Barwood, who also directed Indiana's atlantean adventure, both the tone and dialogues of the game remind of those from FoA.
That style can also be felt in the nature of some of the levels. While the Tomb Raider lever and block pushing are there, item and inventory puzzles play a bigger role than in Lara Croft's outings. Indy will also interact with other characters in some of the levels, which will ask him to perfom certain tasks.
However, the game is not without flaws. Controls feel a bit stiff at times. Even after mapping a controller with joy2key to match the control scheme of a PsOne Tomb Raider game (which DID help a lot), Indy himself feels slower than miss Croft, taking longer to perfom certain actions, like taking forever to draw his gun. Some puzzles can be particularly obscure, too, and the last two levels have a very abstract design to them, not matching the tone of the rest of the game. The offers a bonus level in the Peru temple from Raiders of the Lost Ark right after, though.
Infernal Machine is a varied, decent 3D adventure worthy of the adventurer's name, and those who are familiar with the Tomb raider formula and can look past the game's flaws will sure have a great time with it.
3 Stars because the game is only in english at that moment!
Why only the english version of the game? I have this game complete in german on my old cd-rom.
If GOG will update this game to localised versions than I will buy it.
But not if english only!
I love this game. 10 year old me found the puzzles here vastly superior to those in the Tomb Raider games. More exploration/logic oriented rather than the frantic "what did I miss?" guess work in the TR series.
That being said, the control is ... weird, at best. Horrible, by any modern standards. I think they were bad even by Win98 standard. I play this game with the keyboard exclusively, since I can't seem to get a handle on the way it behaves on a Xbox controller
I have played through this game to completion when it first launched on PC. I remember picking this game up for $10 back then in jewel case and still have my physical copy even today. At the time I was quite taken with the game. Unfortunately as time went on? The game like many others became a bit of a chore to get running on modern machines and you'd have to download a few files from some dedicated modders. These updated launchers often required you to have the original disc. But what do you do if your disc has become unreadable over time? It can unfortunately happen which makes digital preservation and re-releases of these old games so important.
Indiana Jones and the Infernal Machine is a 3D platformer/adventure game. The game is set during the cold war and it's up to you to unearth the secrets of the fabled infernal machine before the soviets do. It's a surprisingly engaging Indiana Jones tale aided by some well voiced dialogue. Unlike the N64 version? The PC version has models where the mouths of the character models are animated.
The controls do feel a bit dated compared to more modern games. They will take some getting used to as you control Indy with WASD. Many of the actions in the game are context sensitive so if you've played other platformers you will probably pick it up pretty easily.
The levels are varied in their locales, if a bit linear. The puzzles are clever but not too challenging. Treasure can be found which allows you to purchase ammo, med kits, anti venom, etc. between levels. There are even a few driving stages
The animations are pretty well done considering this is a title that came out in 1999. Ocassionally a guard will dodge by rolling to the side.
On GOG Galaxy? The game gave me a problem where it would crash at launch. Upon browsing the forums here? Some pointed to Headsets causing problems. I unplugged my wireless USB headset dongle it launched.
