The best Indianan Jones video game

Indiana Jones and the Infernal Machine is a game I played as a kid but never got to fulley experince untill now replaying it. One of the biggest issues that is brought up when talking about this game is the tank controls which without a doubt is an issue for the first few levels but you will get used to them after you play the game long enough. The controls are the biggest flaw by far but what are the pros? Fantastically detailed levels and enviorments by Lucasarts. Some really clever puzzles that will have you backtracking and trying levels over but out of a sense of fun not frustration. A great musical score that sets the tone for the game and gets you amped up to play a level. The voice acting is spot on and you can 100% believe that the voice actor is Harrison Ford when he's not. This game is also a massive bargin, I got 51 hours of gameplay from the first mission to the last and had weeks of fun and enjoyment from the cost of a meal at a fast food returant. I highly recommend this game to Indiana jones fans, 90s computer game fans and anyone who enjoys adventure games

Almost perfect for the time

Some people say this is a copy of Tomb Raider. So I've tried googling "3D Action Adventure" and the results told me that this genre doesn't exist - it's called Tomb Raider, apparently. Some people say this may be a good game, but not a good Indy game. So I took a closer look: Yep, I'm playing as Indy with all his wits and humour, there are side characters with the typical roles to fit, there is the big bad enemy represented by xyz, there are ancient sites with artefacts, puzzles, traps and fictional surprises. You're right, wrong game guys, this is no Indy. Joking aside, most people actually see this as the best Indy game, at least from the 3D ones (which isn't that difficult as there are only 2. No, 2. Don't look it up. There isn't another one). If I had to compare it with Tomb Raider, which is by all means a refined classic for a reason, then yes, the controls and some aspects in that are, as said, refined. But looking at the story, leaving the great intro of TR IV aside, I think Infernal Machine takes the cake with ease, as well as with the character writing. Puzzle design is also superb and the actual locations are interesting to traverse and most of all, recognizable to find yourself around. Things that I think got a bit out of hand after TR II. The combat... is serviceable. If a game gives you more than enough healing items because the devs knew you will constantly trade hits with your enemy, that should say enough. You can actually do a summersault and sidesteps, as well as using different weapons to your advantage - so there is that. Controls, as mentioned, not as good as in TR. Floaty but responsive. The "physics" can mess you up sometimes - and nowadays some things would be made more convenient. Still are good, though. Technically, it works. It has resolution and controller support. But not all worked as expected - and it crashed when fiddling around with it too much. (Don't load saves repeatedly.) To summarize: Quality game then and now. Recommended!

Serviceable action/adventure

Indiana Jones and the Infernal Machine is one of those classic games people look upon fondly because of nostalgia and little else. Back in the day, it was Indy's attempt at "taking back what was rightfully his" from Tomb Raider's Lara Croft, and it kind of did. In some ways, this game is less clunky than the classic CORE Design Tomb Raider titles, especially when it comes to the movement fluidity (still featuring the dreaded tank controls of the genre, but somehow more responsive), it added some cool mechanics using Indy's trademark whip that made sense for an Indiana Jones games -- and that later Tomb Raider titles would end up emulating, too. But it's still "just a Tomb Raider clone", no matter how you put it, despite the fact Tomb Raider "copied Indiana Jones to begin with" (it obviously drew inspiration from the movies, but there's only so much you can "copy-paste" when you were going from movie to game in the mid-90s. Indy and the Infernal Machine has decent graphics, for its time, it certainly won't hurt anyone's eyes, that's for sure -- there were way uglier games made during this time, and no one's expecting Witcher 3 quality graphics, anyway. It's hard to recommend to anyone who isn't an oldschool action-adventure fan. It's a very hard, very cryptic game; the level design isn't nearly as interesting or clever as the brilliant ones in any classic Tomb Raider game, so you'll end up getting lost and confused more often than you'd like. Not to mention the appalling combat. That first snake you find? Yeah, it'll likely kill you very fast, because Infernal Machine features no auto-aim (like the classic Tom Raider games do) and no easy way to aim weapons on your own, so you just slowly and painfully position yourself in a way that your bullets or your whip (hopefully) hit the enemy. This is not a minor grip, as there's a decent amount of combat in this game. Hard to recommend, but a good title if you're interested in the evolution of action-adventures.

Severely Underrated

I first played this back in 2000 when I was 17 or 18. It didn't look particularly revolutionary, even seemed downright childish. But I was a big Indy fan at the time and figured I'd give it a whirl. Despite its clunky controls and cartoonish graphics, it was surprisingly engrossing, with emaculate level design, a wide-ranging variety of environments, excellent puzzles, and a fun story. It wound up being one of my favorite games from that time period. My jaw dropped when I saw it on GOG. I figured it was probably unplayable by today's standards, but I was curious enough to see for myself. Wound up playing through the whole game in like two sittings. It's still so good! Comparatively, I recently played Tomb Raider 2, which I also remember loving as a teenager. I figured if the Infernal Machine somehow held up so well, maybe same-era Tomb Raider would too. And yet I found the latter to be truly unplayable. I couldn't even make it through the first level before giving up in frustration. Not sure what set the two games apart, as they're nearly identical twins, aesthetically and mechanically. Perhaps its just the IP? The nostalgia? I don't know. All I know is this game's just got "it". There's something magical holding it together. It works, and it works well. Just as good of an installment as any of the films. So glad to have it back.

Indy deserves better

Nostalgia glasses shade a lot. I have fond memories of this game 20 years ago, but now, hoo boy are the controls BAD to the point that I find this game to be unplayable. Navigating around even with a controller is a completely painful process and I gave up after struggling on the first level. It's too bad because aside from the control issues this was a great adventure game with lots of areas to explore and some neat environments, especially for the time. Don't waste your time unless you don't mind muddling through the control issues. I recommend Emperor's Tomb instead.
