...but where is the game element?

Been waiting for this for a long time. Constantly checking forums and Dev Diaries. I just finished the game. Well sory but took only 4 hours and even I did go all the posiable places and accuallly spend some time at the mansion (couldnt find my way). What they (thechineseroom ) focused was story. They thought they could give an intence experiance by focusing just that but saddly they dumbed down lots of game elements which made the series is a hit! For example there is no inventory so there for no healt or sanity or complex puzzles. You have unlimited light source! Another dumbed down feature is the blinks that your light is doing when a monster come nearby. So all you do is turn of, crouch and just stand still for a 8-15 sec. Then you continue walking and ingore all the creepy sounds or atmosphere. And since there is no gameplay features all you have is very simplified take this and put it there puzzles. They are so obsessed with the scripted events and so called story ( btw there is no twist ) they forget the "real story" what Frictional Games made all these years. The real story was the experiance! Since there is no gameplay there is no experiance. The Series become Dear Ester which is NOT A GAME! sorry but It is what It is. They've just wasted all the hard work on the details and story by not doing any gameplay issues. Frictional Games should deffinetly make this series for themselfs. Im very disappointed by It. 5/10 (+1 from soundtrack)

Short and Sparse But Heavy on Atmosphere

Anyone who has played Amnesia: The Dark Descent is likely to be a bit disappointed by this sequel, in terms of gameplay if nothing else. The first Amnesia was already a bit sparse when it came to gameplay, with a simple interface and rudimentary inventory and sanity systems. A Machine For Pigs tosses even that out- literally all you can do is walk, run, jump, turn your lamp on or off, and pick up some objects in the environment- and the latter two features are only necessary a handful of times in order to avoid enemies or solve extremely simple puzzles. Aside from a tiny number of enemy encounters, there's no real danger or difficulty to be found. The fact that the game still ends up worth playing is a testament to the story and atmosphere it produces. While the first Amnesia provided scares by placing the player in direct danger, this one produces a sense of terror and dread from your surroundings- the dirty, dark, grim Industrial Revolution environment is unrelenting and horrific, and the implications of the notes you find throughout are truly disturbing. It's a unique experience, and worth playing despite its flaws. Like the first game, there are a lot of reused models and textures- you'll be seeing the same furniture, paintings, gears, books, etc. over and over, and it feels rather low-budget. It was probably wise to set much of the game in a giant mechanized factory where this is less noticeable, and even makes a bit of sense. Weirdly, the game is actually a little TOO dark- you'll need your lamp on almost all the time just to see where you're going. And the plot, while intriguing and well-done, feels like it's missing something- things never quite seem to click, leaving the ending a bit unsatisfying despite some great dialogue in the last few minutes. I enjoyed playing it and would recommend it, but it would be dishonest to give it more than an average rating- it's great for what it is, but there's not much actual game there.

Excellent narrative, horror setting

Connection with Amnesia the dark descent is minimal/non existent. The previous game was lead by atmosphere, gamepley and had a narrative to back it up. This game has atmosphere and narrative, with gameplay to back it up. It's much more straightforward, no inverntory, less monsters, less consequences/challange. If you're ok with a 'light' version of gameplay, then this is fantastic, but if you want the gameplay to lead, as it did in Dark Descent, you may be dissapointed. I would say both games are equally well made, but of different styles. This can be enjoyed without the previous game being played. I recommend it.

It´s far better than you think...

I have played through all three Amnesia titles (TDD, AMFP, Rebirth) and yes, the first one is the best game so far. The dissappointment that many gamers felt when playing the second game in the series mainly originated from the great predecessor. However, AMFP is not a bad game at all. Yes, it may be very short and feels very linear overall. Another thing is that these unique mechanics that the first game came up with were left out in AMFP (light and dark mechanic, matches). Also the puzzles are too simple. However, on the story sided it´s still a great game to experience. I liked the story far more than in Rebirth. When it comes to the atmosphere, it´s one of the best games I´ve ever played. So give it a try and don´t judge it before you have played it yourself!

A good game but a disappointing sequel.

Alas, A Machine for Pigs can’t hold a candle to The Dark Descent. The plot is good, the atmosphere is still sinister but all the fear is gone. Instead of a bone-chilling survival horror, we receive a casual adventure game. How causal you ask? The inventory and the sanity meter are gone. The lamp you’re carrying would never cease to work. The realistic physics are still present albeit they’re limited – you can throw every chair around but you can’t break bottles, lift random items etc. As for the puzzles, I’ve seen more challenging ones in action games. Enemies are not even half as frightening as those in the first part. The pig guys are almost cute and when I encountered one for the first time the game didn’t even allowed it to kill me. Still I liked this game. The interesting story and the dark mood were enough for me to enjoy Amnesia: A Machine for pigs in spite of its many flaws.
