Mod spotlight: Far Cry

After a break in posting retrospectives and spotlights, we're bringing back the "something to read about good, old games" section to life. Today we're highlighting mods for Far Cry.

Far Cry, featuring the astonishing CryENGINE, was incredibly looking and one of the most innovative shooters back when it was released. 6 years later it still looks really good and with the active modding community it still brings loads of fun. Thanks to the the sandbox editor, every home-grown level designer could create a first-person game of their dreams. The results of some modders work are incredible and we'd like to draw your attention to couple modifications. Don't hesitate to comment and add more fan-made mods as we know there are plenty of them - we're just giving you a spotlight on the ones we really liked.

First Contact: Planet Fall

Let's start with a total conversion of the original Far Cry made by seven students from The University of Salford, calling themselves The Shark in a Cube. You play as BioChemical Scientist Lucy Rhea. Being a part of the Extra-Terrestial Reconnaissance Authority (ETRA), you're on a mission to explore an unknown planet "Hestia". Your job is to evaluate its possible risk/benefit to humanity. Unfortunately something goes wrong and your ship crash leaving you as the only survivor. The modification features complete new world with unknown flora and alien creatures, plus a well worth discovering story.

Roomette

Although 'Romette' isn't exactly a game, but rather a 'vision' we were just charmed with the design. Made by MaVmAn/MaVrOs and EveFeve is a "virtual representation of the visual and imaginary universe of my girlfriend" as stated by the author. The room presented in the mod reminds the crazy design from Psyhonauts while the small ducks running on the floor make it even crazier. Bravo!

The Delta Sector

The Delta Sector is another complete modification of the original Far Cry. This time instead of traveling through a paradise island we're going to explore forest terrains in Eastern Europe as a member of special forces team. The modification seems to have even better graphics than the original Far Cry and features new weapons, vehicles enemies and of course new single player missions as well as new multiplayer maps. Go get it!

FC Mars

The last mod in this spotlight is a multiplayer only modification but puts you in a totally new environment. FC Mars, like the title suggests, takes place on Mars. After exploiting all resources on Earth, humanity decides to colonize the red planet. Scientists manage to build bases, labs and even changing the atmosphere on the planet so humans can live there. Unfortunately it looks like not only humans are interested in colonizing Mars - a fight for control over the planet begins. FC Mars features 6 multiplayer maps, new vehicles and new weapons and offers a very nice multiplayer experience.
