An unexpected pleasure

Posted on 2011-05-24 18:02:07 by Xian97's avatarXian97:

I bought this several years ago for my son. I have always played RPGs mainly, where he liked RTS games, but since this had RPG elements I decided to give it a try after he had finished it. I was pleasantly surprised at how addictive the gameplay was and how much I enjoyed the game. I always disliked the micromanagement you had to do with strategy titles but this seemed to hit theread more perfect balance.
Some maps played like an action RPG such as Diablo where you took your party exploring the map conquering everything in sight. Other times it required more muscle to defeat the enemies, so the RTS portion kicks in and you have to raise an army by gathering resources, building a town, and creating your army.
The storyline was good and the quests were varied, some spanning several maps. This does not have the Dragon Storm expansion, but I liked this one better, and maybe GoG will get DS too. I am hoping that eventually the other expansion, Faith In Destiny, will be released, but that is up in the air with JoWood declaring bankruptcy.

Amazing game that's so much more than the sum of its parts

This is just a review about the game that GOG is offering, not a treatise on why only the original is available without expansions.
As a fan of Action RPG's and Fantasy RTS's, I suspected a game that tried to do both would end up diluting both. While there is a measure of that going on, what surprised me is how engrossing the gameplay is as a whole. It's addicting and fun; if you're a fan of either genre or both, give it a try.

Really good, but where are the expansion?

Posted on 2011-05-24 10:35:56 by MagicFeather's avatarMagicFeather:

Really worth your money, if you like the orginal one, you will like this one! But if you expect all the expansions like SpellForce Platinum, you will be disspointed. But if you like a RTS, mixed with a RPG, with a intresting world and characters and have allot of time to dig in this game, you will have a good time. Also this game is not short, so you will play this for hours andread more hours. SpellForce 2 is a good sequal to the orginal, with some tweaks here and there. Only note is, where are the expansions?
