Dear Gog team,

im quite unhappy, that today the client updated to 2.0 without my explicit consent. I paid close attention to the news and forum posts about this new version and decided to keep the old client until the biggest problems have been fixed.

It dazzles me that a simple funktion like a link to the forum at the gamepage is still not implemented, even after all this time and the so frequent requests in the forums and the short time it would take to write a code for that. If something that small is already a problem, whats with the realy important functions the client should have?
I thought that being part of a Beta is optional. It seems i stand corrected.

Best regards
Emico
uninstall it and download 1 instead then take control of your system back

You're far from being alone in being unhappy about this. I personally don't dislike Galaxy 2.0 in its entirety, but forcing the update while it's still in beta is a terrible decision.
Hello ussnorway,

thanks for the link but i dont get what the re-download of the 2.0 client would change? I read about the new installation of the old 1.2 Client. But it seems that even if i download the client again, it just updates to the newest version, as some topics suggest. Maybe i dont understand something but to me it seems like that isnt the solution for my problem.

Hello obliviondoll,

i realy hope your open letter will bring change to this problem. I'm also surprised that there is so few communication between gog and us users. It baffles me.

I wish you two a good time.

2.0 sucks!

Unhappy is an understatement for me. I just declined the update yesterday and today they auto-updated it for me. Plenty of bugs, can't see my tags, the ' symbol in game names is changed to &amp or some shit, it automatically detects (and tracks and updates on default settings) my installed GOG games, which I do not want, and I see no option to download the setup package only without installing the game! What the fuck?!

The number one reason I use this platform is downloading and storing the game myself, so I have actual ownership forever, and GOG Galaxy 1 verified the download to make sure there are no errors.

I truly hope they reconsider and give us back control over our games. This is a huge downgrade for me.
Hallo AlphaVillain,

now that you mention it... I checked my settings. Seems like they are the same as before. Need more time to check it. The games can be downloaded without installation. If you are at the gamepage click on "Extras" there you can download the Installer like before.

Thats for me also the mainreason why i use GOG and not Steam or some other site.

I hope that too. ^^
Yeah, I found it a few minutes after raging, sorry for the fake news. I still dislike the update. I wrote a post about the other issues:

That topic links to the most recent non-2.0 file for the old version of Galaxy as well as instructions on a command line code to enter to prevent Galaxy from auto-updating on launch, as well as a file to delete or rename which will stop it from spamming you with requests to update. The filename is only shown without the extension in the topic I linked, but it's actually "GalaxyUpdater.exe" not just "GalaxyUpdater" (most modern versions of Windows don't show the .??? part of a filename when it recognises the file type) and if you change the ".exe" to ".old" or something you can keep the file in the event you want to update in future without needing to reinstall, or change some other part of the filename or simply move it to another folder.

With those changes, you won't have to worry about your prior version of Galaxy being overwritten by 2.0 any more, so it is actually a solution. That said, I'm not so sure about ussnorway's claim that the original link was "edited", since many earlier posts of the information have been untouched and there's no indication of an edit having been made on the post in question, so it's more reasonable to expect that they mistakenly posted the 2.0 link instead of the 1.2.x link they intended to share.

Now, let's put that tinfoil hat down for a second, you linked the 2.0 version yourself. It literally says so in the actual link you pasted. Mistakes happen, especially slips of the pen like that. Nobody "GoG" edited anything there.

Even if you're 100% sure, I myself have had windows repeatedly refuse to copy something into the clipboard myself, despite repeatedly hitting the keys to copy, or clicking in the context menu to copy something, Windows wouldn't copy it. It would still paste the previous thing I had copied, rather than the new one.
That one is a bug in Windows, and may have happened here.

AlphaVillain: I just declined the update yesterday and today they auto-updated it for me.
Now, here's the thing, though - you didn't decline the update. Because...
The prompt doesn't allow you to decline. You get to choose between "Yes, update immediately" or "Yes, but update on next start". You were not able to select any sort of "no" as an answer. As soon as that prompt shows up, you will be updated to v2.0 if you don't know how to actively prevent it from happening.

I created a dedicated topic as a "How To" for all cases I could find all over the forum, with instructions on how to deal with them and get back / stay on Galaxy v1.2, here:
HOW TO Keep Galaxy v1.2 client and avoid the forced v2.0 BETA update

Hope this helps to clear things up.

no tin hat needed

also just to be clear,
example assumes X drive
"X:\GOG Galaxy\GalaxyClient.exe" /runWithoutUpdating = correct
"X:\GOG Galaxy\GalaxyClient.exe /runWithoutUpdating" = wrong
Since the move to the 2.0 beta version, my GOG games library has disappeared. I have a ticket open for it (along with many other users who have experienced the same issue) and it still has not been truly addressed by anyone at GOG other than asking me to delete some files, reboot my system, reinstall the client (which none of it worked) This major issue has gone mostly unacknowledged. I downgraded to the 1.2 version only to be auto upgraded to the 2.0 version. It is pretty irritating that an issue this big affecting multiple users was not properly addressed before forcing the update to 2.0.

Thanks for all the tipps, tricks and clarifications. The Link @ussnorway posted worked perfectly. In the Post it says it will download the 2.0 Version but it downloaded the 1.2 version. That's the reason i was confused. ^^ So thanks Ussnorway for the link!

@obliviondoll Thanks for the clarification. Now i understand it. XD

@BlackSun Tanks for the Tutorial. That made a lot of things more easy for me. ^^

@ChronicJuiceboxx Just downloading and installing the "newold" Galaxy client doesn't work. Sadly. A few "Windows MAGIC" steps have to be done like oblivion and Sun have explained. *sigh* Why can't it be simple... XP
