A farewell to arms promo!

The Arma Series, that is Arma Gold Edition, Arma: Cold War Assault, and Arma 2: Combined Operations (complete with the Operation Arrowhead expansion), providing the ultimate mod-enabled first person-perspective military simulation experience, is available up to 80% off on GOG.com. That's only $8.17 for the whole set of three games, for the next 72 hours.

War has always been, and probably always will be, one of the predominant themes in computer games. From 8-bit systems to contemporary monster gaming rigs you'll have simulators, strategy games, and war-inspired arcade titles. But there's only one type of game that could let you really see war as a first-hand gritty and immersive experience. An FPS, first person perspective shooter. Again, there are many levels of realism throughout the genre. Some of the war FPS' tend to focus on storytelling, using heavy scripting to deliver a cinematic experience. Others don't try to hide the fact, that the war you're seeing isn't real and that the main goal is to have fun while playing. And there's the Arma Series.

Arma Series is a game series that will make you feel like an actual combatant on one of the modern-day military missions. A game that will amaze you with its level of realism in recreating actual weapons, military gear, ballistics, and battlefield conditions. A game that will challenge you in ways no other wargame ever could. Dropping you in the middle of a fictional conflict, that feels more real than most things you see on the news, it proves to be the ultimate modern-day military simulation that you can play outside of actual military VR training facilities. Arma 2: Combined Operations allows for massive multiplayer matches that can host up to 50 players simultaneously, and the Operation Arrowhead expansion that, on top of adding another campaign to the game, provides extensive mod compatibility, this is the FPP wargame you want to get, if you mean business.

On top of that, Arma 2: Combined Operations is required to run DayZ, the most popular game modification since the infamous Hot Coffe. What? You don't know what DayZ is? Don't fret--we've got you covered.

Do you think you can handle real virtual warfare? Find out if you really know which side of the assault rifle you should point at the enemies in the complete Arma Series, for only $8.17 on GOG.com. The special promo lasts until Saturday, June 7, at 9:59AM GMT. Games also available separately with lower discount rate. The games already owned on GOG.com count towards the higher discount.

Important note: This is a last chance promo, as Arma Gold Edition, Arma: Cold War Assault, and Arma 2: Combined Operations will be removed from sales on GOG.com on June 22, along with the remaining Bohemia Interactive title: Original War. If you buy (or have already bought) any of these games, they will remain on your account "shelf", so you'll be still able to access and download them.
in terms of multiplayer, is there any difference in getting the GOG version or steam version of ARMA games?

piepvogel: Due to the shutdown of Gamespy they found a solution in porting their old games to Steam Services.
tbh, Steam suxx, but this solution is better than nothing.
Single player games don't need Gamespy or anything like that.
Bohemia could simply label the games as single player only.

tinyE: I've never played any of these. How is the SP? For some reason I've always been under the impression they were primarily for MP ie: the Battlefield games.
I can't say for ArmA1+2 but I've played the complete Cold War Crisis and most of Red Hammer campaigns (I have the boxed version of Operation Flashpoint, now also Arma that includes those and Resistance).

Those were some of my most intense gaming moments of all time. I can really recommend it. As a word of warning though: These are not shooters. They are more like "infantry simulators" (with some vehicle missions, like tanks, choppers, even an A-10). The controls are rather complex, more than, let's say, the original System Shock, since you not only have to manage body positions but you also have to worry about reloading, commanding a sqad etc. But Cold War Crisis starts out quite slow and adds more elements (commanding, vehicle control) over the course of the first few missions, so it's not that hard to get into it.
Like most mission based games (simulators) there is no unlimited saving. Some missions have checkpoints, and you're free to save once per mission "manually". The missions can go several hours since they often involve recon on enemy positions and carefully sneaking into fortified bases. Fortunately the game always creates an autosave when you quit, so you don't have to tackle these missions in one go.
As with other simulators, one good hit will kill you (do not think FPS with health points, think Falcon getting a direct SAM hit). I was literally bathed in sweat playing some missions ("After Montignac", *shudder*). Dying can be frustrating, but since the missions are very open and the AI pretty dynamic, every take on them plays out differently - I never was bored, just sometimes rage-quitting and cursing the developers. I can't deny that it's sometimes a matter of luck to succeed. As one time when I was lying in ambush in some bushes a convoy of enemy tanks passed by. Somehow they got suspicious and started steamrolling all of the shrubs. They one left two standing - I was in one of them.

I recently (well, about a year ago) tried a second playthrough of the original Cold War campaign, and the game totally had me again. After a few minutes I woudn't notice the dated graphics. I had to abandon this endevour since someone gave me Skyrim as a present. But it's still on my list of "games for near future".

Btw. I never played OpF MP. But I had a lot of fun with the editor. I woudn't create real missions, I staged big battles with tanks, air support etc and would sit on a hill and watch them unfold.

Edit: typos

XD I just noticed the only one my OS will run without problems is #1. That makes things easier.

Indeed, I enjoyed the Cold War Crisis campaigns and missions and never touched the multi-player. This sucks. : (

JMich: ArmA 2 on GOG provides you with 2 serials, which you can use to activate ArmA 2 and ArmA 2: Operation Arrowhead on steam. Didn't see a serial for ArmA: Cold War Assault or ArmA: Gold Edition.
Confirmed by redeeming on Steam.

Can you confirm it ?
This is a damned shame. I think GOG is going to eventually have to put together their own gaming services to have another option than dropping games from GOG which go Steam-only. GOGspy or whatever. If GOG controls the centralized component of these games for matchmaking and whatnot, at least as one of possibly several options, then if the other services like Gamespy go down the game can live on with GOGspy.

Not holding my breath on that mind you, but if something doesn't happen then lots of games are going to vanish from GOG and the service will eventually just have nothing but old games, single player games, and indie platformers and roguelikes which isn't going to be a viable business forever.

I can.
Look at Arma 2 on your gameshelf.
The serials are under the install files.
Snagged the 1st one. By the time I get a new OS I'm sure the others will be back. :D
I don't care about Arma, let's leave that aside. But one thing pops up from the comments above: what about multi-player in games nowaday? with GfWL and GameSpy dead, and becasue of developers being lazy (let's be honest about it: they want a convenient solution, so they won't have to write their own code) Steam is becoming the only option.
I think this is a great moment for a GOG to make a move and announce some sort of multiplayer solution - a platform or framework, or at least multiplayer servers for older games. This is really a good moment to do that, I hope that's what they are going to tell us tomorrow.

I can't since i don't own the game .
If the reason for removal is the GameSpy shutdown -> what the heck?
They could just label it "LAN only" and that'd be it.
Why, Bohemia? Now one of my favourite game series of all time gets removed from my favourite game reseller... :'(
