Videotraf: You and me, brother.

And Jill of the Jungle. And Zone 66. And Fire Fight. And One Must Fall 2097 (I know it's freeware, but still the CD version with soundtrack would be a great addition to GOG).

And yes, at last, the forgotten gem that is Catacomb series! Pre-Wolfenstein corridor shooter goodness.
Jazz Jack Rabbit and Fire Fight take me back to being very little, oh to have those times back again.

On topic, I never knew about this game before today. As such I will give it a look when it goes on sale.

tfishell: "Now it's freeware due to the fact that Epic (Mega)Games no longer sells its older titles." Sounds more like attempting to justify "abandonware" unless it really is legally freeware. (Probably a good thing it's illegally there to at least preserve it.)

In any case, I'm bewildered that Epic apparently hasn't let GOG re-release Jazz 1 & 2. WTFcharles.
This page is from Ken Silverman, the creator of Ken's Labyrinth, his game is freeware now, Jazz Jackrabbitt and Jill of the Jungle aren't
About time. Make Flat Rock dig deeper into what they own so we get Alien Rampage and Keen Dreams.
I was literally just thinking about how GOG.com needed Catacomb. I can't believe how psychic you guys are.

Could you start thinking about LucasArts? :P

tinyE: Are these actually all fun fun fun or fun in a nostaligia sense ie 'Wolfenstein 3D' where you install it, play it, think "Hey, thisis great!", and then five minutes later realize you are bored out of your mind?
Bah. I can play Wolfenstein 3D into the night for hours and hours.

Not that it really matters; when my ship comes in I'll likely snag them anyway. :D

*raises eyebrow* Seeing this video, the screenshots don't do this game justice. The game is well animated and drawn for its time, it has a decent pace, plays well. I didn't expect to like what I saw!

JMich: Venture into the depths of FPS gaming history!

Catacombs Pack, a collection of games that lay the foundations of the first-person shooter genre on the PC bundled with their 2D dungeon-running predecessor, is available on GOG.com, for only $5.99.

In 1989 John Carmack designed and released a top-down action game featuring a mage blasting his way through an old, moldy dungeon. Who would have thought, that this simplistic title would evolve into a series that would take gamers into a whole new dimension. There are other games often credited with creating the very first bits of the FPS genre, but if you asked John Carmack, he would probably tell you that it all began in the Catacombs.

Catacombs Pack features five games. The Catacomb is a top-down dungeon-runner with simplistic yet exciting gameplay. Catacomb 3D: Descent takes that basic idea into the realm of 3D and into the first-person perspective. The trilogy that follows--Catacomb Abyss 3D, Catacomb Armageddon, and Catacomb Apocalypse--add a fantasy story of sorcery and blood on top of that, to create an experience that would capture the gamers' imagination and sprout into a whole new genre.

Before the call of duty doomed you to roam unreal places and exterminate predatory aliens with a big freakin' gun, there were Catacombs. Get the whole Catacombs Pack for only $5.99 on GOG.com!

Edit: apologies
Hey, you! What are you doing up there?

Pics never do a game justice, look at "Blade of Darkness"! Those remind me of my DMV photo! The collection is on my wishlist for sure but so are 50 other games so I'll just have to sit tight for a while. It really does look like fun.

Wreaking havoc with GOG's releases? Ninja'ing the blues? Popping up where least expected? Messing with posts? Take your pick :P
An amazing release at a fantastic price! Thanks GOG!

One note, however: You said John Carmack would say the FPS genre began with Catacomb 3D. That isn't true, since he worked on an even earlier FPS game, Hovertank, which most consider to be the first PC FPS: http://www.mobygames.com/game/dos/hovertank . I'd love to see that forgotten classic here as well!

Vote for it on the wishlist: http://www.gog.com/wishlist/games/hovertank_3d

LucasArts was purchased by Disney. So I don't know how it's gonna work out.

Couldn't work out any worse than before.
Damn, I remember playing this game at my cousin's house sooo long ago. Only had the shareware version though. I might pick this up sometime.
Resident id/Apogee classics nerd here.

Some people where asking about the "music track", some people already posted some links to YouTube videos, but for those who are really into trivia, it is called Too Hot by id/Apogee go-to musician Bobby Prince. This track was first used in Catacomb 3-D - The Descent, and then reused a month later in the very popular Commander Keen 4 - Goodbye, Galaxy! Secret of the Oracle.

Also, for people who can't get enough Catacomb, here's a link to the original Catacomb game for PC (sometimes called Catacomb I to distinguish it from the confusingly titled sequel The Catacomb, the top-down game in this pack) which isn't included in Catacombs Pack: http://www.classicdosgames.com/game/Catacomb.html
Is anyone playing this right now? Is is worth it? I'm currently replaying Doom and Wolfenstein 3D on my iPod at the moment and having more fun than I expected.

Looks like the Kickstarter to port this thing to the iPhone failed mirerably: http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1803047198/porting-the-catacomb-series-to-iphone

That's too bad, I didn't even realize there was a kickstarter to begin with.

I beat it this winter (bought from Flat Rock). They're fun. The first 3D game is a bit different from the following trilogy, and you get stuck in walls if you try to rub on them, but still fun. The levels are mazes but there's a decent variety of textures and even dead ends usually hold something useful. Oh, and if you look at the screenshots, you'll see a comment line above he HUD - they use it all the time to name different sections of the level, give hints at their purpose, warn you.
