Well, they all aren't good games - they are sort of mass produced every year by that Italian indie dev IIRC. Not bashing, just saying some of them could certainly use another polishing pass or two...
Winter Wolf games are basically visual novels, some having RPG and other elements, often otome, with a western audience leaning. Several are sort of youtube lets player favorites, and then people buy them afterwards at those prices despite having watched the whole thing for several hours. So yeah, there's a market all right.
Actually, now that I remember it, I really enjoyed DexterityBonus's let's play of Always Remember Me. Something to watch on a rainy day. Visual novels on the whole are slowly rising in popularity on Steam (now that they are starting to actually... you know... appear on Steam ;)). A lot of stuff like Fate/Zero got their start as eroge, y'know ;) (I think Steam still doesn't accept full-fledged eroge yet, but they are slowly and silently adopting select games with increasing amounts of "adult content").
Glossary:
Otome = Female targeted - meaning you can romance guys (and sometimes girls for fan serv.... I mean diversity)
Eroge = The very mass produced visual novels, often from Japan, with varying amounts of nudity and other "adult content"
