If you think the folks in this forum aren't a pretty good bunch for a random Internet forum with tens of thousands of visitors a day, you must be new to the webz.

Hi, welcome to the Internet. I recommend you avoid links to a place called /b/. Enjoy the cat videos. We seem to have a lot of them here. ;)

I'm not a fan of the cat videos, is that a new thing? Besides it's a little slow to run on my Mosaic browser.

deathkitten: It'd be nice if people couldn't hide your posts, it's just really obnoxious, it's human nature for stuff like that to never work out people always just use it against anyone they don't like... http://google.com/products?q=lord+of+the+flies+%22william+golding%22
http://www.prisonexp.org

To me it just makes me just think it's justified to repost the message when they do that...
What Wishbone said. Besides, posts get downrated all the time and nobody even notices. I'm not sure how many downratings it takes to have a post hidden, but suffice to say, if all of your posts are being hidden, it's a pretty reliable sign that you're pissing everyone off with your obsessive linking, verbal abuse and overblown accusations of persecution.

Kissing TheEnigmaticT's arse and openly stating that you're a proud pirate in the same line is somehow counterproductive. He's being polite and professional because that's his job, but my gut feeling tells me that he is really crying over his morning coffee for not being able to slap you silly.

And what's that with your eyes? Have you got some kind of congenital condition that causes you to roll your eyes back into your head at random intervals? I've got a good exorcist I can recommend.

deathkitten: TheEnigmaticT is C*** C*** C*** normal acceptable language for titles or posts here?
Only if it's after the 9PM watershed.
I have to actually get to the office, but let me leave the thread with this: name calling in any direction will make no friends. Flooding downvotes here on this thread is also probably counterproductive, since we're trying to discuss things. Let's all try to be civil for the next hour; if when I get to the office this has devolved further, I'll have to lock the thread, and no one wants that.

Well I'd certainly agree about the lack of any unspoken rules.... when you can let his lable fly on a site open to everyone I get the impression that you either don't do your moderation jobs properly, or that anything goes. Which is it?

There's a growing amount of locked threads on the forums now. Indeed, there are more locked threads than knitting champions in an East German jail.

Oh god I shouldn't be allowed to make jokes

That's actually very true. It personally makes my groin itch how obsessively Steam forum mods enforce rules that don't exist, inconsistently enforce rules that do exist and don't stick to their own rules at the best of times. (Edit: This is not a rage against Steam, but a random example. I think the same shit happens on the Gamespot and IGN forums, but I don't even bother going on those anymore).

The way that GOG does it is a rare thing but it works. Be as profane and controversial as you want, but when you start trying to get a rise out of people - which is what I get the feeling deathkitten is trying to do - is where the line is drawn.

Writing CUNT CUNT CUNT to make a political statement is one thing, calling someone else a cunt for the sole purpose of being abusive another altogether.

Calling it a 'political statement' is a bit of a joke.. I see no context pointing out as such, however.. if I were to use that word against someone I certainly wouldn't expect moderators to pop up and penalise me, where as 'certain' usages get away with it.

In my book I call that hypocracy.

I don't know how it's felt about anywhere else, but in the UK it's a particularly nasty word only used by shitboxes and scumbags.

Corrected.

I still don't get the point you're trying to make.. just seems rather childish to me.

I'm going to leave that open to interpretation, like a Lou Reed composition.

So there is no concrete statement. That being the case then you are just being childish.

Well, how long is a piece of string? Either way, I honestly do not give a shit about whether you think I am (was) being childish, much like how I don't give a shit if you're into pegging and torture porn. Your opinion means nothing to me, even though you are well within your rights to say it, much like how I am well within my right to say this.

Much of what I say here is for my own amusement anyway, and if you cannot tell if I am either a) making a point b) being a dick c) having selfish amusement at the expense of others, that is not my problem. Is it hypocritical of me to act in such a way, while criticising twats like deathkitten? Perhaps. But I never held myself up as a paragon of righteousness and respectful commentary on the forums.

I'm guessing that you're a tad older like many of us.

I personally don't get what michaelleung is trying to say either, but the point is that international online communities like this one seem to be less affected by the social implications of profanity. Someone can say "cunt" to me and I won't flinch, even though I implicitly know what it means and its taboo nature. Saying "Fotze" (German for cunt) doesn't really get the same shock value out of me anymore either, although it still comes across as harsh.

In short, the internet is depriving profanity of its taboo status.

Edit: Ah, I get it now.
