It works for all Blizzard "Legacy" games. With LOD for Diablo 2 you have to download one installer for D2 and another one for LOD.

The Starcraft key gives you both Starcraft and Brood War in a single download as Brood War didn't have it's own cd key protection.

Elmofongo: I just redeem the CD key for Starcraft on the Battle.net website and its downloading (1 gig, that must be big for Windows 98 PCs back than)
Originally, it was under 500 megabytes, but after Blizzard issued a no-CD patch, you had to copy the
main file from the CD to the hard disc. Having the Brood War expansion, you would have to copy two
500 meg files, and rename them to your HD. So yes, that was a lot of space to take up on the older
systems.

Make sure you do the same for Diablo II and the expansion.

Everything will sort itself out once I download the expasion to Diablo 2?

Mind you I already have Diablo 2 installed via CD. And they work perfectly. There were color problems but a patch via singing in to Battle.net in game fixed the colors. Only thing its in full screen with black bars to the sids, but nothing bad.

Is there any reason to download the digital version over playing through CD? What benefit does the digital version have besides no longer using a CD?

And for Warcraft 3 I assume?

Fenixp: Dude, seriously
I will say this, Trying to the colors for Starcraft 1 CD version is more difficult than Diablo 1 :P

Thank goodness Diablo 1 has the color fix mod avaliable for ease.

Not sure if the versions are compatible, or what you would benefit beside having it with no CD.
I have it because I had color issues like in Starcraft so the digital download version fixed it for me.

Well the CD version of Diablo 2 did have color problmes but the patches via Battle.net in game fixed it by itself. Same applies to Warcraft 3+Frozen Throne for me.

I don't have that game to redeem an old CD key. So I can't say about performance.

I do have the original World of Warcraft, and it's expansion, though I've never played them.

In case anyone else is reading these posts,
you can still buy these old classics at Blizzards site,
(Star Craft/Brood War, Diablo II and Lord of Destruction expansion and Warcraft III)
and get the digital downloads if you don't have an old physical copy to redeem .

They have a key you will need to use to install the game at first,
so remember to save the key (in a text file) when you archive your digital copy.

coxdr: Try this. Open notepad and type

taskkill /f /im explorer.exe
starcraft.exe
start explorer.exe

hit save as and at the bottom pick save type as all files.

name the file anything.bat

hit the save. put the new file in same location as the old starcraft exe. use that to open starcraft from now on. If you want you can go further and make a shortcut for the file you can place anywhere.

javihyuga: Shouldn't you pause after starting starcraft? In my experience, I needed to pause, because if not, the explorer started with the game and the script was useless.
I never had that problem so I don't know. It works as is for me and keeps the task killed till a exit starcraft

All except Warcraft 1 and 2 and Diablo 1.

(And I am one of the lucky few to own a CD of Diablo 1)

Considering that Diablo was a best-selling game that kept being re-released over and over "few" is a bit of an overstatement.
avatar
Fenixp: Or open resolution settings window and keep it opened.

I'm not kidding :D
I wonder if that is PC/configuration specific, as at least on one PC (laptop) where I tried that, it didn't make any difference for some reason. Killing explorer worked though. I don't recall which game it was I tried, it could have been Warcraft 2 BNE or possibly Fallout (retail version, non-GOG).

Fenixp: .
... Or you can open resolution settings window, as I have said in the second reply :-P Just right-click your desktop and clikc resolution settings. It'll probably work.
avatar
Grargar: This has never worked for me.
Ah ok, I am not alone then...

My brother one time bought 2 battle chests for Diablo 2. One for him and one for his Girlfriend (they play Diablo 2 together alot) and by sheer luck only his Girlfriend managed to have a Diablo 1 CD included in her Battle Chests. So technically this CD belongs to his Girlfriend. But considering how the game is I don't think she would like or even will care for Diablo so she gave it to me.

So I assumed getting a Battle Chest with Diablo 1 included is a bit a of a Rarity.

Aye, edited my old post as it could have been misinterpreted :P

I wonder how many of those old discs were tossed out on a whim...
even though I've never played the original Diablo.
The second game and it's expansion was (is) enough for me.

Well, in Europe there was the Blizzard Anthology which contained Diablo 1 alongside Warcraft 2 BNE and StarCraft + Broodwar, each of them in its own jewel case. I kept seeing that box in stores for ages, later I also saw a re-release of that box in a DVD format box, I think I last saw it on Polish store shelves just two years ago, maybe it's still in print. Maybe that box wasn't available in many other regions but in Germany and Poland zillions of people must have bought it.

The only problem I have with Warcraft III/Frozen Throne from Battle.net is that the colors in the movies are washed out. In game everything is fine, though.
