Not significantly; I never played the third or the fifth one until many years after the fourth and sixth. There are a few callbacks, but not many, and nothing that prevents you from enjoying the games.

Nope, because they are actually developed by Valve and, thus, exclusive to Steam. There is a way to run the first Portal without Steam (and not through piracy if I may add), but to do so would demand you to create an account on Steam, as well as download the client.
