Celton88: Sounds a little like the old Ambrosia SW Escape Velocity games. Which were awesome...
avatar
IronArcturus: That Escape Velocity: Nova game looks pretty cool!
EV, EV Override and EV Nova were some of the best games of their genre, with just about everything you'd want in a space-based 2D isometric CRPG.

I would love to see EV Nova on GOG, with its official ports of EV and EV Override as downloadable extras.

JudasIscariot: Fun fact: Rebel Galaxy is made with the OGRE engine :)
Which makes it even less fun that the game does not come with a Linux version. :(
avatar
bssybeep: because playing a game in all 3 dimensions is a PITA.
Not when it's implemented properly. Archimedean Dynasty is a good example or maybe Descent.

IronArcturus: GOG, you gotta get a deal with Microsoft to get Freelancer! :)
You gotta get a deal with Microsoft. Period! :P
I'm so waiting for the Age of Empires games to come to GOG.
Keep getting crashes when I'm in the commodities menu randomly. It's already happened twice. Looks like some painstaking troubleshooting is in order :(

Hopefully it will as I don't feel like building 64-bit WINE right now :P

Pardinuz: LOL! I noticed that too. :)

Is it really a trap, though? Or is the game as cool as it looks?
That depends on what you expect. I have seen this game yesterday at a friend's house, he got it via Steam. And personally I am not convinced. The two main things that bug me are: 1. you are "flying on rails" (you can't go up and down with your ships) -- and yes, I know it is meant to be that way --, and 2. the game is just about grinding for better equipment. That means you can do stuff, but despite getting better gear I don't see anything else. For example the story... well, you clearly don't play this for the story. To me that kills immersion, and I don't feel anything like I felt when I was playing e.g. Freelancer.

That being said, one has to admit that this is not a triple A game, and it definetly doesn't want to be another Freelancer. So if you are that type of person, who loves to grind for better stuff, who loves to see some (indeed nice looking) explosions, who loves to come back every once in a while to have some fun in space, I'd say give it a try. And if it gets on sale eventually, then it will definetly be worth a closer look. All of the above is, of course, my personal opinion, based on first impressions after roughly 2-3 ingame hours.
Not sure about this game. It looks too similar to Starpoint Gemini 2, and it's missing some features from that game that i really like (especially the ability to cloak).

I may buy it when it goes on a huge sale, but not now.
Like the look of it based on a few video playthroughs (wishlisted). Also looking at devs page looks like soundtrack wont be available for sale.......

On other hand im still pining for a game where you have a crew and combat allowed designation and pinpoint targetting of enemy systems during combat. Is there anything like the old rules of engagement floating out there?.

Smannesman: Interesting but regionally priced and too expensive for me.
regionally priced better for me compared to steam. Steam I would be paying AUD $5 more after currency conversion.

Still I have to think about it. As realistically it will end up joining my list of unplayed games for a few years at least.

Well I kickstarter backed a couple of games that might have that functionality (one day). Mandate and the other one was Star Citizen. Though both are targeted as multiplayer (if you ignore star Citizen's single player fighter based game Squadron 42).

WinterSnowfall: Think DarkStar One meets Freelancer (in the sense that you can change ships - in DarkStar one you were stuck with one evolving ship).
avatar
IronArcturus: So it's a more tactical game like Nexus: The Jupiter Incident?
The vibe I'm getting thus far is that of Starpoint Gemini 2. There are some differences in implementation between the two, but the basic idea (you essentially play as a single capital ship, exploring and running missions - and can change out your ship for various models with different features) is pretty much the same.

Has anyone tested if it works on Windows XP? Does it require 64bit OS?
As I can see it needs DX 9.0 only.

Edit: Steam release has Windows XP in minimum req - is GOG's one any different? It has no WinXP mentioned.

I'm really enjoying this game so far. I think it's better than Starpoint Gemini 2 in a couple of important ways. The biggest one is that there are actually viable alternatives to make money and upgrade your ship, unlike in SG2. In SG2 you capture ships or you stay poor - that's it.

The music is great. The graphics look nice. The combat is fun. The sector is randomly generated whenever you start a new game. The game world is very interactive.

Han Solo Simulator 2015, AKA Rebel Galaxy is shaping up well to this point.

shmerl: Do they plan a Linux release? The game looks interesting, but without the Linux version I'm not going to buy it.
avatar
JudasIscariot: Well, I am taking a build home with me to see if it runs on WINE so I'll see for myself :D
avatar
shmerl: Please let us know how it went :)
Well....

I might have to build a 64-bit WINE version for this one and see how it goes. I mean the game itself needs DirectX 11 and MSVC++ 2012 but I am worried about the 64-bit versions of such :/

If there was a way to have two different versions of Wine without having to do a WoW 64 build, it would be great :D

I tested it on two machines, one was win7, which worked without issue. The other was my winXP rig, which failed to load up. Upon further inspection it appears to be built for 64 bit architectures only. I did find some additional info after further searching. Tomorrow one of the devs is planning on looking this over as XP support was something that they were initially shooting for and just didn't test it out during game development.

I thought you were talking about Rebel Galaxy (isn't it DX9 based?). That's what I see in the game card:
DirectX: Version 9.0b

DX11 support in Wine isn't ready - otherwise I would have tried to play Witcher 3 already ;) Not sure what will happen first - CDPR will decide to wake up and release Witcher 3 for Linux, or Wine will implement DX11 support.

You can use PlayOnLinux for that. It allows managing many Wine versions (it installs them locally in your home directory). Including 64-bit ones.
