cogadh: The game itself plays on a flat plane
Why do so many space games have this limitation? Space runs in all 3 dimensions and yet so many games limit it to 2D. Was Homeworld the only game that allowed free movement in 3D?

Because real space is infinite, so they either have to restrict to a particular plane, or institute equally annoying "invisible walls" to keep player from flying off into no where.
Looks great awesome.

Is it just me, or this game looks, and the trailer especially sounds like Firefly?!?

Wishlisted for now, but definitely a keeper.

I'm not saying that the space in the game has to be "infinite," but movement in 3-directions can still work. In Homeworld, the "maps" were basically large empty boxes with asteroids and planets in them. I'm sure other space games could do the same thing.

I assume the developers decided that the broadside combat wouldn't have worked in full 3D. I think it's worked well despite being initially skeptical of that design myself. The game is really fun from what I've played so far.

I can also inform you that the game has a windowed mode and borderless window mode as well as controller support (I think you often ask about those things - sorry if I've got the wrong person though!).

because playing a game in all 3 dimensions is a PITA.

I have the game, and the first part of the game with the music really does remind me of Firefly ;-)

And in a more tactical combat game like Homeworld, or in a space dogfighting game like Freelancer, that certainly does work (still has the annoying invisible walls though), but in a "single capital ship slugfest" game like this, it would make the combat frustratingly impossible.

MrGOTIME: Is there any sort of crew management in the game? Can you hire new crew members with personalities or anything?
avatar
cogadh: You can hire mercs to fight alongside you, but otherwise it is a one man ship. Most of the descriptions so far are pretty accurate: Freelancer's open galaxy to explore with Assassin's Creed pirate ship combat and RPG-ish equipment and upgrades for your ship. The game itself plays on a flat plane, instead of in full 3D, so no flying up and over opponents, just circling around each other, pounding the shit out your ships with broadside cannons.
Sounds a bit like SPAZ, then, but with a camera you can rotate instead of being locked at top-down. And probably more variety in the missions. And hopefully a bit more freedom of exploration.

Which wouldn't be a bad thing at all - SPAZ is a lot of fun.

WinterSnowfall: Think DarkStar One meets Freelancer (in the sense that you can change ships - in DarkStar one you were stuck with one evolving ship).
avatar
IronArcturus: So it's a more tactical game like Nexus: The Jupiter Incident?
No. There's a tactical part to it, but it's more of a third-person action rpg, or hack-and-slash... in space... better said obliterate-and-blast. You can also trade of course, but I imagine it's not that fun to play if you're a convinced pacifist.

Heh, thanks for telling me!

But I bet the broadside-combat could still work in 3-dimensions. The ships would have to rotate at an angle for it to work.
So I'd been drooling over this one for a while now and I'm going to go ahead and pick it up - my second Day One Purchase (TM) ever! (Sunless Sea you were an awesome game - here's hoping I go 2 for 2! ;) ).

If anyone wants any impressions or has questions let me know as I'll be firing it up tonight.
Sounds a little like the old Ambrosia SW Escape Velocity games. Which were awesome...

That Escape Velocity: Nova game looks pretty cool!
