Let's turn the page.

Visual Novels have arrived on GOG.com! Our first selection includes acclaimed games, revered for their intricate artwork and stimulating stories, up to 66% off until May 29, 1pm UTC.

Higurashi When They Cry Chapters 1-5 (25% off): Spawning a popular anime and manga series, Higurashi is a "sound novel", where meticulously designed audio plays a crucial part in these unique stories. Chapters 1-5 are available today, with Chapter 6 slated for release in the near future.

fault (50% off): Sometimes it takes a healthy dose of pulp sci-fi and a dash of fantasy to weave a powerful cinematic story about the human condition. These two episodes of the ongoing series star the perky princess Selphine and her sarcastic guardian Ritona, as they desperately try to make their way back to their homeland.

Sunrider series (66% off): An alternate universe, intergalactic strife, mech combat, high school, and love all around. Sunrider: Mask of Arcadius (free!), Liberation Day, and Sunrider Academy are a beloved and unique mix of strategy, romance, and visual novel. De-censor patch optional, but come on.

eden* (66% off): Stock up on tissues. This critically-acclaimed love story on a dying planet is a real tear-jerker told with stunning cinematic flair. Humanity is about to be wiped out by a red star but this story is destined to stick around for much longer.
Also, wow at all the ignorance in this thread so far.

Buy Higurashi and play it with the original sprites by the way.

Wolfy777: I don't understand why people are bashing a whole genre of games.

Desmight: For me personally, they're not games, that's why I don't like the idea of them being on this store (which has been heavily curated until today). I know I'm gonna get a lot of hate because of this, but I wanted to give you an answer.
Well, you're definatatly not getting an angry response from me. ;)

That's a valid point in most cases (visual novel are somewaht like clicker games in the gameplay department, click to advance to a new chunk of text). Besides everyone's entitled to their own opinion.

Personaly I prefer storydriven games and visual novels boil down to: story + artwork and music.

I'm not sure if it's sensible to be against an option though. If you don't like them, you can igrone them.

This is probably a bad example, but let's try it notheless.
I don't like Facebook and don't use it because your posts are stored as sellable information on it and can easily be sold to the highest bidder if the owner chooses to sell it.
Obviously I'm not going to use the option to log into GOG via Facebook.
But if other people want to have that option I don't see why not. It's their choice to use it and has nothing to do with me.

So we can agree to disagree.

P.S. I'm not trying to bash your opinion, I'm just adding a point to a piece of it.

Have a nice day. :)
Or we can debate further if you like.

Gilozard: Visual novel fans keep telling me they aren't just excuses for softcore.

This selection is not bearing that out.
can't speak for most of these but I am familiar with Higurashi(at least from it's anime adaptation which is pretty spot on to the VN) and it's defiantly not softcore, it's a pretty weird, surreal horror story about a town that seems to be in a loop where horrible murders just keep happening to this group of friends again and again.

Drakkoone: Gross, Sekai Project is spreading.

Note that I have nothing against VN and porn, it's only a problem with Sekai Project, a disgusting company.
Sekai is like the VN equivalent of Aldorlea for RPG Maker games, they have some good ones and they have some real garbage, and if you buy Humble Bundles you've definitely seen the garbage ones.

I picked up the Sekai bundle because it had one game I wanted, and the bundle was less than buying the game, found two more in it I enjoyed and a whole lot that I couldn't even force myself to finish despite getting them for free.

GOG.com: Date-sim gameplay
Just checked the definition at Wikipedia and... wow, there's so much to learn about japanese games and culture in general; i didn't know there is a whole genre where you're supposed to date girls etc! Japan really is the real life equivalent of Morrowind it seems. :P

MrFortyFive: I've never really been a fan of visual novels, but it's good to see that GOG isn't ignoring an entire genre of games for some arbitrary reason anymore. I'm sure this will make plenty of people happy.

Bouchart: Now that visual novels are coming to GOG I hope you get Plumbers Don't Wear Ties on board.
avatar
MrFortyFive: I will, however, make an exception to my distaste for VNs for Plumbers Don't Wear Ties.
same here ..... they are not real games .( it's a 'game' Jim, but not as we know it :D this would make a perfect picture: Start Trek bridge view with screenshots of a visual novel , while Spock says " it's a 'game' Jim, but not as we know it : captain.)

Dozens and dozens of visual novels many are quite expensive yet they sell like crazy ............
I dont mind if they arrive by the gazillions :D , if 'niche' games could get thesame treatment that would be awesome

I'm not really a VN fan but...

For those who are hating on the genre because they're not games, have you also railed against GOG for allowing such "garbage" like Gone Home, Firewatch on the site?

Personally I loved Hatoful Boyfriend and would love to see more VNs in that style come over. Like a real classic would be Ever17, even if the translation was dubious. Or Christine Love's stuff would be a great addition.

To put it shortly: solid turn-based strategy with anime aesthetics and elements of visutal novel for flavor. The game holds even if you are interested mostly on the strategy part. Plus, it is free.
...

Sunrider: Mask of Arcadius is a very solid turn-based strategy game featuring space combat among both starships and mechas.

Then there is the dialogue between missions to carry on the story, although there are also events during battles that complete the story as well.

The strategy part is worth it even if you do not care for the dialogue that much. It has some especially silly moments, while there are other times when the story is more dignified. It achieves its purpose, giving flavor to the battles.

The players mobile base and mothership, the Sunrider, is a spaceship of new design that combines qualities of a carrier with those of a battleship. Its hangar can accomodate mechas. The player sees things from the point of view of her captain.

It is possible to upgrade the Sunrider and the mechas between missions. Also there is a (very handy) simulated combat feature that lets you experiment with development routes iin set virtual battles. There you can make all the changes and fight the opponents that you wish, in order to both improve your tactics and seeing what would work better for you.

The game is free. The sequel, Liberation Day, is paid. You can consider Mask of Arcadius as a very generous demo.

The game holds. If you like strategy, it is very worth giving it a try.
Awesome
Thank you

lostwolfe: oh boy.

gog. stumbling from one controversy to the next.

public profiles? check.
taking a week to solve that issue? check. [and then doing the barest minimum while they were there.]
suggestive vn's? check. [after years and years of "curating" them away.]

i like adventure games. and i love stories in my games.
but when the game is basically just an excuse to have suggestive images on screen...
...hard pass.

i know, i know. you're all going to downvote me. that's totally ok.
I dont vote anyone down .... already told my how i feel about downvoting , also suggested to remove the - button cause it might be okay for kiddie forums but not for some commercial forums or companies like GOG ( down vote would fit nice on Steam)

Anyway i hope we will now also get niche games :D let them come :D ( i dont mind much more of the same )

DreamedArtist: GOG's catalog just got %100 BETTER!
seriously , it gets better , no joking these are hot items and if they are hot you should take advantage of it so GOG made a wise decision .... a plus is the number of games will rise like a star ( or whatever they call it)

Finally I have an opportunity to buy visual novels on my favourite distribution platform. I hope that GOG's future VN library will have good curation, quality control and minimal censorship. People need to be exposed to some good visual novels without all of the blatant low-effort pornography garbage that flooded Steam VN library.
So, with one is good/best?

I already played Loren The Amazon Princess that I enjoyed and one or two Sakura (a bit boring). I just hope some selection from GOG.
