GOG hero details revealed • D:OS 2 releasing September 14

The complete release of Divinity: Original Sin 2 is drawing very near, releasing September 14 on GOG.com

There are many reasons to anticipate the release, including the opportunity to encounter one character in particular – designed, inspired by, and chosen with the GOG.com community – a fully voiced NPC with a unique backstory, and her own share of secrets...

A hero's journey
For backing the D:OS 2 Kickstarter campaign, we were given the chance to work with Larian Studios on a unique in-game NPC: the GOG hero. And because the more is the merrier, the entire GOG.com community would get to be a part of the process from the start.
Beginning with a forum-wide brainstorm and a series of art and writing contests, the GOG community would draw, doodle, pitch, and design countless ideas for Larian Studios to take to the drawing board.
Months later, three designs would be revealed by the studio and the finalists put to the community's vote.
In the end, it was Eithne – an undead librarian, merchant of rare and arcane knowledge – who emerged the clear winner with 59% of all votes. She became the official GOG hero made possible by the community!

Meet the hero
Divinity: Original Sin 2 is releasing soon, and it's a thrill to finally meet Eithne!
Check out the teaser trailer for a taste of the character and voice acting in action. Plus, we got to briefly talk with Charlene Putney, the writer behind Eithne – you can read more of it below!

But the best way to meet Eithne is in-game during your adventures (regardless of platform). We can't wait to see her ourselves and want to give big thanks to Larian Studios for the opportunity, and to our entire community for being a part the creative process!

See the trailer for Eithne

Here are some extra tidbits of info from Charlene "Char" Putney, the writer for Eithne:

1. Without venturing into spoiler territory, can you tell us how soon or late in the game we'll first encounter Eithne?
Eithne wanders in an area quite a ways past where the current Early Access stops. Without spoiling anything, I can tell you that she lurks in a ruined building in a forested area of Reaper's Coast.

2. What can we expect from Eithne in terms of stock?
Well, as voted for by the good people of GOG, Eithne is an Undead Librarian, so you can expect her initial stock to reflect that character! I have other things I'd like to say about this... but I'll keep my mouth shut for now!

3. You are the one who brought Eithne to life: tell us a bit about the creation process. What is your favourite thing about her?
The thing I like most about her is something I can't say, as it would definitely be a spoiler! But what I can say is that I like the story of where she comes from and how she came to be who she is now.

Midoryu: Like many others I am really disappointed with how her design changed from the initial sketch. The current look isn't just plain ugly, it feels uninspired and boring.
Like CharlesGrey mentioned, the old design had a mysterious vibe to it that made you want to learn more about the character.

Maighstir: Agreed, but the new looks much more accurate to a personification of our community.
Well, speak for yourself. :P

She probably looks more like an average tumblrina(?), with the weird hair. Besides, she seems fairly friendly, from what I've seen in the trailer. If she was based on the average GOG ( forum ) user, she'd be a cranky old guy, telling the player character to get the hell off his property. ( And maybe that would have been more fun, come to think of it. )
Then, there is me, that has only one problem with this gog-inspired hero. She is no Doryld. :P

Ehm, excuse me, THE Doryld.

CharlesGrey: So, um... Since no one seems to have mentioned it... I just watched the trailer, and the final character seems to look nothing like the original design people voted on? What happened?

Also, yeah... boobs!
The boob thing is easy to explain: she had a boob job from the esteemed undead surgeon, Dr. R.U. Olive.

melmovano: Did I miss something or aren't the player characters voiced?

Divinity Original Sin 2 ==> Enhanced edition again?
No, they recently announced that they were voicing *every line* in the game--remember that the Early release software is an alpha-version of the game that was released way back in May and has not been updated since.

adaliabooks: While I definitely agree that the original design was much better I think Larian will have edged towards the sillier end of the character design as that's a bit more in keeping with the feeling of D: OS than a very serious character would be.
Silliness could be portrayed through the way the character carries herself, interacts, the lines she delivers, etc.; had they maintained the dark and mysterious vibe, the contrast to the way she looks would/could, imho, have a greater effect conveying Larian's sense of humour.

Unless it'll be the other way around?

I don't see any resemblance between the two. The proposed design was pretty great. Don't like the endresult at all. First time I clicked through to the trailer I saw the character on the background wallpaper design and didn't even bother watching it. Horrible, from the hair down to the uninspired design on the all black clothing.

The character seems interesting to me. The armour is built to accomodate boobs but that doesn't mean there is anything there duh!
Well, the undead characters in the world of DoS2 have to disguise themselves if they want to discuss with mere mortals, as they're not well liked. What else to draw the gaze from the face than a big pair of boobs. Just saying.
Meh. Way to kill a fantastic design.
I don't see the point in asking the community then ignore their submission almost entirely and redesign it completely.
Just don't ask anything and make directly the NPC you want, then.
Like most of the others said, I find the change in design disappointing (although I've forgotten if I even voted).
Otherwise, community character, yay!

I'm starting to suspect it may have simply been an issue of money and required work hours. Upon closer inspection, the in-game version of the character doesn't seem to have any unique art assets. It looks like they simply used standard models/textures from the rest of the game, instead of giving her a unique model and animations. Kinda disappointing, when compared to the original 2D design.
Maybe she WILL look like the original design initially, then take off her wandering library backpack and shroud and look like that skeleton in the trailer?

Kind of like Kylo Ren.

Maybe, but that would take even more development effort, so I doubt it.

( Besides, if that were the case, I doubt they would have revealed her "real" appearance in this trailer. )

Exactly, all we got out of the original design that it's a she, an undead an ex librarian. Other than these basic thing we got nothing out of the original design, the look totally different (and uninspired) and we got the personality of the least voted concept "The Doryld". I'm really disappointed.
My opinion : the new design sucks .
From what I've seen in the game, she has boobs and hair because the undead models use the other races' animations, hair and armor. And she looks nothing like the concept, because they used in-game assets instead of making new ones specifically for this character. Yeah, it's a shame, but that's the way the world works. Making games takes a lot of work, and sometimes things don't make it in the final release for a huge number of reasons. I do like the voice actor though.
