IAmSinistar: Note that The Guild 2: Pirates of the High Seas and Pirates of Black Cove have One Time Key Validation (ha, pirate games with anti-piracy measures!).
avatar
timppu: Is this "one time key validation" now the "CD key validation", which never tries to authenticate the (single player) game online?

If it is, I don't see how it can be considered an "anti-piracy measure", unless pirates are somehow unable to enter a string to a question box during the installation. :)
I would assume it's the CD-key type, since the games don't look to have an online multiplayer component, though I could be wrong and they may have some kind of online play. It's "anti-piracy" in the same sense as my earlier post - you can't install without the key, and you can only get the key from either your own purchase or "pirated" from somewhere else. The "anti" part comes into play with the potential threat of legal action against key sharers, or alternately from within if you have enough conscience to not share your key. As I've said before, it's pretty toothless protection, but the kind that makes the suits in the management office happy. :)

EDIT: Semantic correction

IAmSinistar: Today's ShinyLoot deals of note (more on the site):
Since the start I have an eye on ShinyLoot, but unfortunately for them I already have games I'm interested from other sources. But I must admit the search options on ShinyLoot are impressive - difficutly, combat style, view, many subgrenes, multiplayer-style, Plot & Level desing. Wow, just wow. I really hope they will get more publishers and drm-free games in the future, so far in my opinion a really good start. Sorry, for off-topic btw, but I really needed to say this.

Stooner: This game looks sooo good... and is made by some Brazilian team.. ;p
Yah, that one and Pirates of Black Cove are definite gets for me. The Guild 2 titles are tempting, but I've got a lot of those kinds of games already, and I'm trying to scale back my purchases to just what I am most likely to play.

IAmSinistar: The Guild 2 titles are tempting
Quick info since you're talking in the plural: You really only need one "Guild 2" title; Renaissance.

The gameplay of the basegame (Guild 2) and its expansion (Pirates etc.) is completely included (and expanded upon) in Renaissance. There's also "Venice", but that plays like a badly made mod of the pre-Renaissance version, there's no reason to buy it unless you're keen on having "complete" collections at the cost of buying crappy products. ;)

Ah, thanks! Odd they didn't mention that in the description of Renaissance, but very good to know. I think for $2 I may have to get it, even if it languishes unplayed for a while. Just too good looking and interesting sounding to pass up at that price. I appreciate the info!

In all likelyhood, the descriptions are written by the publishers. And Nordic doesn't seem to be particularly keen on informing people about the interrelations of these titles, I guess they prefer people to buy all titles instead of just one. ShinyLoot probably doesn't know about such details, for the global market these games are rather obscure products. I have a bit of an advantage there since the series was very popular here in Germany. In any case, even if they know about it, ShinyLoot might not be able to change the product description without the publisher's approval.

Also, I recommend the game. It has bugs which never got fixed, but it provides a fun and rather unique gameplay experience. If "medieval business sim" sounds like your cup of tea, give it a shot.

Psyringe: snip
I suspect you are correct re: the product description. It makes sense, and no doubt people are indeed buying a product they don't technically need because of it. As you say, I don't hold ShinyLoot culpable for that, as they are probably bound by the agreement terms to use the description the publisher provides.

I did indeed pick up the title, just too good to pass up for such a low price. I'm sure I'll get my money's worth out of it at the very least. :)

Gamestop seems to be around a decade behind on the whole digital game shop business...

I have made a couple of purchases there and it ALWAYS seems to go that path. I would like to have Torchlight II but really hate having to buy from them.
