We used this year’s spring cleaning to dust off some of the great DOS classics.

Thanks to the partnership and long-time cooperation with the DOSBox Crew, together we’ve managed to enhance with cloud saves feature over 100 classics, with more to come.

Since the introduction of the Universal Cloud Saves to GOG Galaxy, the feature has been added to more and more all-time classics that never offered save syncing and cloud backups. Working closely with DOSBox Crew and adding cloud saves to older games is another step that we take to improve gamers experience with good old games.

Many of these cloud saves enabled DOS classics joined the Spring Sale line up offering savings for such must-haves like Colonization (-75%), Dungeon Keeper Gold (-75%), Heroes of Might and Magic (-75%), Alone in the Dark: The Trilogy 1+2+3 (-75%), Wing Commander III (-75%), classic X-COMs (-75%), and many more.

EDIT: will be updating the list as more games are being added

With this new update I no longer get the horrible sound distortions in the old X-com game.
Thanks, GOG! :)
I verified and repaired all my DOS games that got this update and that seemed to do the trick. They all launch perfectly now.
Will we have to move our old saves to use them/get this benefit? or will they be moved automagically when we run the games with new dosbox?

Thiev: Found some last minute issues and will have to roll back several games:
*All* of these updates are failing for me, with "Installation failed: Disk Access Problem".

Possibly because I have games installed to F: rather than C: ???

I have a whole *bunch* of these installed and they fail one after another, so I paused updates.

I cannot try Verify/Repair because it puts that at the *end* of the update list rather than the start, so it won't happen until I unpause and let all games fail (there's around 20 still listed to be updated), which seems like a stupid thing to try right now because I have no reason to think that Verify/Repair will actually fix "Disk Access Problem".

(Note that putting manually-requested updates at the end of the update list rather than the start is a serious bug in itself, for reasons like this)

GOG Galaxy 1.2.54
Example: Cannon Fodder failed with this message in its Library entry:

Installation failed: Disk Access Problem
26569645 * Cloud saves synced

Edit: P.S. forgot to mention that I rebooted and it changed nothing. Also, this is on Windows 7.

visconteprimus: Pardon me for not understanding, so this is a feature only for GOG Galaxy, right?
avatar
JudasIscariot: That's right, this is a Galaxy-only feature.
I think you should also add that, even without Galaxy, the games will now include a new separate folder for the "cloud saves".
Which can be quite useful for those who (like me) sometimes want to backup their save files even with offline games.

I installed the new versions over the old ones (offline installation only ) and the games ran very fine. No bugs and the old saved games remained intact.

elcook: Softporn Adventure
hell yeah
This new DOSBox overlay feature is so handy even without using cloud functionality. Since DOSBox reads its default config from within the current user's home dir, you can easily set up separate save (overlay) directories for different users without duplicating all the game contents (or without even knowing the game's layout).

squid_80: you can easily set up separate save (overlay) directories for different users without duplicating all the game contents (or without even knowing the game's layout).
That’s what we‘ve been doing with ./play.it for quite some time now, using some custom hacks to add an overlay.
We’re most probably going to update our hack to use DOSBox built-in overlay as soon as it hits a mainline DOSBox release.

The main upside of ./play.it overlay is that we can use different directories to store game configuration and game data (saved games and such). So when you want to share your saved games between different systems, you can still use different configurations.
The main upside of DOSBox overlay is that you don’t need to know the list of writable files in advance.

I hope once the DOSBox overlay is available in an official public release, we will be able to get the advantages of both methods working together ;)
Fantastic list of games!

Me happy
My prayers have been answered. Now if my computer dies I won't have to restart all my DOS games again.

A lot of these games regressed in version number. That makes it hard to keep track of what updated with local files.
I also noticed that some games speed has been improved.
Master of Orion 1 was toooooooooooooo slooooooooooooooooow. So much that it became frustrating to play.
Now it has an acceptable speed and it's much more enjoyable. Thanks
@GOG
The Call of Cthulhu: Shadow of the Comet library/download page has the game incorrectly tagged as only being in Italian (or strictly speaking in Italiano), so language filters no longer work properly on it. I wondered why my English only download filter resulted in no download for this game - now I know why.

Qbix: It's a bit more complicated than that ;) but lets not delve too deep into the details.

The code will be included into the main line and will be part of the next "big" release or maybe earlier, so any build based around the main line code will get it.
avatar
Bluddy: I'm actually interested in the details. I couldn't find documentation for `-t overlay` so I assumed it just redirects all writes to the overlay mount, while reading first from the overlay mount and if not found, in the regular mount.
Things get more complicated when you allow files in the regular mount to be deleted (fake of course) and directories
(the overlay one) to be hidden, when they are part of the normal mount location. (as is in this case).
(and of course being able to create a file with the same name as was just fake deleted and then deleted again!)
And of course ensuring that it works on Linux, resulted in quite a few name translations going on.
There is also logic to create missing directories in the overlay. Redirecting the data is only a small portion of the code.

I don't think they are magically moved. Only when you save them again, they end up in the overlay.
It might depend on the game though.
