Welcome, Russian-speaking gamers!

GOG.com has always been about bringing you the widest selection of the greatest games: classic, new, all DRM-free. To keep this up we need to grow, and to grow we want to reach out to more gamers worldwide. We've already unveiled a French and German version of our store, and today we're introducing Russian to GOG.com! (Did you know that it's the second most used language on the internet?)

We already have more than 150 games in Russian in our catalog, and today we celebrate by releasing six new DRM-free games - including two digital distribution exclusives and three weeklong discounts:
-<span class="bold">Galactic Assault: Prisoner of Power</span> (digital distribution exclusive)
-<span class="bold">Sea Dogs</span> (digital distribution exclusive)
-<span class="bold">Wings of Prey Complete</span>
-<span class="bold">Pilot Brothers</span> (-33%)
-<span class="bold">Men of War</span> (-50%)
-<span class="bold">Death to Spies</span> (-50%)

We have over 30 more games on sale this weekend up to 75% off: Russian-language games straight "<span class="bold">From Russian with Love</span>"! That includes not just the new releases, but also the King's Bounty saga, S.T.A.L.K.E.R. series and more. Everyone is invited to mingle, and it's as good a time as any to break down gaming's largest language barriers one discount at a time.

With an all-new website language, localised customer support, and a dedicated Russian forum, we're hoping to become the right place for all of our Russian-speaking gamers. We’re also adjusting our prices in those regions. For over a year we’ve been offering games at lower prices in Russia and other independent countries that emerged from the USSR, places where game prices have historically been lower than in western markets. Starting today, more games will be priced appropriately for these territories. We've decided to adjust our pricing to the realities of the market, to avoid a sense that you have to pay more to get your games DRM-free or that GOG.com games are more expensive than other stores that operate in those regions.

Just in case you wondering, introducing these price changes won't affect the way gifting works today on GOG.com.
Looks like a good batch of releases. I need to find out more about a few of them and figure out which ones to prioritise

Magnitus: I didn't follow the issue closely, but if memory serves, isn't it ultimately your government who makes these stupid calls?
Well, yes and no. The laws in my country might be stupid, but they didn't change since the existance of GOG. I never had problems to buy the games, it only became an issue, because GOG decided they want to open a German version of their store.
great news
Finally brought Vangers. Only ever had the demo and liked it, I look forward to playing it!
Men of War for six bucks is weird, but I'll take it; especially at the discount.

Except I just checked and Steam sells it for five. Easily worth ten to fifteen, but whatever.

All told, this is pretty awesome of them.
Wow, so many new games I've never tried! Has anyone played them before?

Well, I doubt very much that GOG decided to boycott 2 of their games in your country. They must have done so due to external pressures (probably of a legal nature) to do so.

Now, weight the pros and cons. Is every German able to read in English? Probably not. So yeah, they were forced to bar 2 games, but opened up the door for a lot of people (obviously not you, but a whole bunch of people around you) to now be able to use their website and make purchases on it.

I can understand why GOG did it. As far as I'm concerned, GOG went in with the best of intentions on this issue (make their website more accessible) and your government didn't. You frustration toward GOG on this particular point is misdirected. You should direct it fully at your government on which shoulders it falls to have your best interest at heart (a task at which they are failing on this issue).

If it's any consolation, I think my government is pretty stupid too. We are in dire need of democratic reforms, because what our government is doing and what the majority of our citizens want diverges by a lot on several issues atm. They got a majority of seats (and are thus effectively a dictatorship until next election) with only 39% of the popular vote. That figure alone speaks volumes.

ygroza: "From Russia with love" - I got this to my mailbox today.

Thank you, GOG, my country is shot with tons of Russian rockets and bullets daily, by Russian militarymen and "militia". We don't need more "Russian love" here.

Unsubscribed from all your maillists from now.
ygroza, I understand how a literal translation of this might have upset you. However, GOG was making a reference to the title of the second James Bond movie, from 1962: "From Russia With Love". It was a pop culture reference, not a political statement.

In other words, GOG was trying to evoke images of a spy in a tuxedo, not refer to the current Ukrainian crisis. Misunderstood, but not malicious in intent.

Yes, as it is described in gog announcement thread above.

Quote: "Starting today, more games will be priced appropriately for these territories."

So "more games" means "every freaking title"?

Awesome. I can retire from the regional pricing tracking business, as the battle has just been decided. Another victory for Russia in the unethical power grab game. Lesson to other countries - piracy pays, provided you do it at a big enough scale.

Novotnus: No Stalin Subway? :(
:D
But seriously, great news! Maybe I'll motivate myself to learn Russian at least a little with GOG's help? :)
Well, Witcher sure did motivate me to learn Polish. I didn't get that far, but now I often don't even need subtitles to understand what characters say (playing with Polish VO).

You know the funny thing is that most software installed on pcs in my country is pirate stuff but that doesn't seem to affect the market at all for us. Weird stuff indeed.

Magnitus: Is every German able to read in English? Probably not.
Well normally every German in the western part of the country and everybody under the age of 35 in the eastern part should be able to read and talk in English (we have to learn it in school). But I assume that many of them are just too lazy to bother with any language except their own.

But I get your argument and you are probably right. It's just that GOG introducing regional locks felt like another step in the wrong direction (they once wanted to treat every customer the same). But as long as it's just the two games, I will get over it.
