New release: Wing Commander 3: Heart of the Tiger

Welcome to the new era of CD-ROM games! There’s an insane amount of space, so what to do with it? Oh I have an idea, let’s take top-tier actors (Mark Hamill, Jason Bernard, Thomas Wilson) throw them into the great Wing Commander universe, develop a new engine, write an even more epic story and voila: you have Wing Commander 3: Heart of the Tiger! We’ve added this classic title to GOG.com today, available for only $5.99!

You are Luke--er--I mean Col. Christopher "Maverick" Blair (played by Mark Hamill). After the destruction of Concordia, you are transferred to an old space ship carrier the TCS Victory, by the order of Admiral Tolwyn. Your mission is to destroy the catlike Kilrathi for good and ensure the survival of humanity. Without delving into spoilers, you are up for yet another episode of this epic struggle between two star nations battling for dominance--and survival. Enter into the life of Maverick, talk to your wingmen on the ship and in outer space, or pursue a romantic relationship with a fellow pilot dancing on the razor’s edge.

With the budget of an A-grade Hollywood movie, Wing Commander 3 incorporates FMVs on a whole new level, with more than 3 hours of cinematic storytelling. They’re not there only for your viewing pleasure: you get to live the life of a Confederation ace pilot in dynamic cinematic style. Time-constrained decisions, vast dialogue options, and plot-critical conversations all occur on film during your time aboard the TCS Victory. Apart from the flashy movies, Wing Commander 3 has a whole new space combat engine. Sprites are so early 90’s, and now it’s all about polygons. Behold the colossal battle ships in their full glory, you can even fly into a dreadnought hangar and shoot it from inside out!
Wing Commander 3: Heart of the Tiger flies up to a whole new orbital with new graphics, new FMVs and, one of the best epic war plots in the history of entertainment are the ingredients for space-sim success.

Special thanks for all the great goodies we managed to get with this release goes to Ben Lesnick from Wing Commander News. You're the man, Ben!

Note that (as you may have read) my statement is not true per se as other WC games used a 3D engine before.

To clarify, WC3 is the first game in the WC1-WC2-WC3-WC4-WCP series to use a 3D engine, which is - I believe - the core information you wanted :-)

RafaelLopez: Yeah I know WC3 induced classic gaming boners all around the world, so it's all the more important to mention this travesty and make it clear, otherwise it might be easily forgotten or forgiven: Ultima 7 woulda been better. It could even have come BEFORE other Ultima games.
Shhh... you're scaring my WC3 induced classic gaming boner. And I'm waiting for Ultima 7 too. Patience—you've waited 20 years already, just wait a little longer—I'm sure it's in the cards.

It seems like things are happening in order--it doesn't seem unreasonable to expect the last part of the various Origin franchises the next time GOG puts out some EA titles (Ultima's third trilogy, Wing Commander's post-war stuff, that other Crusader...)

I loved this game. I remember when it first came out and I had it for Christmas. Unfortunately my Dad's computer at the time wasn't powerful enough to run it, so I had to take it back.

I was pretty gutted at the time, but picked it up a few years later when I moved out and bought a top of the range PC. It was a really good experience, and was very cinematic.

I'm not usually much of a space shooting gamer, so I don't know how the space gameplay and missions measure up to other games (and I've never fought in a real space battle, so I don't know how realistic it is..:-) )

However, even though I'm not much of a shooting type gamer, I enjoyed the story and the immersion, and the missions I felt were varied enough to make them interesting.

At this price, it's an absolute bargain. Nice one GOG.

Was looking forward to this one. Wish-listed for now, but I'll be picking it up soon. Wing Commander IV won't be out for a while, right?

Daventry: YEAH! 3DO FOREVER!!!
I remember when the 3DO was going to completely revolutionize gaming; hardware-wise it easily outgunned the other consoles of the day. Then they announced the price tag...

andrewmclaughlin: Speaking of Great Space Sims, I Finally got my copy of Tie Fighter CD to work on windows 7 as well as XP. It was an horrific ordeal I can tell you but I got it working perfect now. This game is LEGENDARY. Its the only Space Flifgt Sim I like more than Wing Commander 3... but not by much. Hopefully gog will put that one up soon...
TiE Fighter was hands-down one of the best games I'd ever played; combined with my CH Flightstick Pro it was an awesome game, and the TiE Defender was one of the most badass vehicles I've flown/driven in a game; next of course to the Black Lance's Dragon fighters in Wing Commander 4. :)

TIE Fighter is indeed excellent for a story driven space combat game, but I prefer the greater versatility and graphical prowess (in comparison) of X-Wing Alliance. Multiple regions of space and dynamic objectives for the win :p

I remember getting my (probably extremely rare) copy of Wing Commander IV for the Mac during a Boxing Day Sale at the Compucentre in the Toronto Eaton Centre many moons ago (I think I dated myself by mentioning Compucentre). At a hefty 6 CDs it was a huge game, and I was amazed with how much they could pack into one game. I played the hell out of it on my 120 MHz Performa with my Flightstick Pro, so much so that my eyes ached and my hands were clammy with sweat. I'd play it until 2 am, or until my dad screamed at me to get off the computer, and then I'd come home from school and do it all over again.

I remember grinning from ear to ear when I got the Dragon. It was like the BFG in Doom, all over again.

Can't wait for this :) I have tried a few times getting my Collector's Edition CD running on both XP and Win7, and always end up with problems with either DirectX, or the joystick drivers.

Almost there now. I made the video but it ran a few minutes long so I have to do it over. to be honest, i've never done this before. I just know that there are more gamers like us who would do almost anything to play this title again. i'll have it done within the next 24 hours.

Hello Friends

I have been getting a lot of requests to explain hoe i got my copy of Tie Fighter working properly so I hope this helps you guys. I never done this before so I apologize for the quality.

Remember you should have a legal copy of the game with you. If you contact LucasArts via email, they my even give you permission to download it. Anything is possible.

My Video Explaing How to get Tie Fighter to work on windows 7, XP and Vista is now live on youtube. please forgive the poor quality. its my first video but it should get you from point A to point B. Do a search for "How to run Tie Fighter" by "DosGaming101" and you should see it in the list. or click on this link.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZyfX-HDXEyg

Remember that you need to do 2 thnigs in order to get this game working properly.

1. Go to the Tie Fighter folder where you installed the game and open the "dosbox.play" file (with notepad)make one small change to the file. Scroll down to the part that looks like this.

joysticktype=auto
timed=true
autofire=false
swap34=false
buttonwrap=false

And make the following change

Replace timed=true with timed=false (Note that this works for other Origin Sims as well).

Save and exit.

2. Right after you start the game you will come to a black screen that says "press any key" at the bottom of the screen. Now BEFORE you press any key, be sure you have the joystick "Throttle" pushed all the way forward or all the way "+"

Finally press all the buttons on the joystick a few times. Then and only then can you "press any key" and start the game.

Behold the Greatest Game Ever Made ! ( Not including rpg's ) And i Know from games. I've been gaming since 1981 and i've seen some good shit in my time.

Its High time We All play a game that take more than 4 hours to complete.

Hope this helps you guys and I hope gog does not mind me doing this as I love the site and have about 20 titles in my collection and i plan to buy many many many more. I check the Homepage about 20 times a day to see any new additions and or sales. Awesome.

Now if you will excuse me I have about 450 X-Wings that Darth Vader wants me to turn into scrap !

Andrew

Happy to see this available here, and with the wealth of extras. Anyone given it a test drive in Win7 64bit yet?

Yeah, the GOG guys did, hence why the compatibility on the game cards lists "Windows 7 (32 & 64 bit)".
