Description

Captain Blood DEMO is available here.

Steel and swagger. Gold and Glory.

Captain Blood is a pirate-themed action game set on the Spanish Main in the 17th century, where you step into the boots of a fearsome pirate on a quest for gold and glory. Expect wild adventures with cannon firing, pistol shooting, swashbuckling sword fights, and plenty of pirate shenanigans. This action-packed hack'n'slash features fierce hand-to-hand combat, hordes of enemies, and a classic fighting system with flashy combos and epic finishers.

Prepare for intense deck battles where you can fire the ship's cannons and fend off blood-thirsty boarding crews. Collect gold to upgrade your fighting skills, buy new weapons, and become the most feared buccaneer on the high seas. Fight for wealth and glory!

Key features:

  • Epic Pirate Shenanigans: As Captain Blood, live the life of the bravest and most fearsome pirate on the Spanish Main (or at least fake it convincingly).
  • Intense Action: Dive into fiery hand-to-hand combat and show enemy pirates and landlubbers alike who's the boss with various slick combat techniques.
  • Ship Deck Brawls: Fight off enemy pirates trying to board your ship with unique moves, combos, and executions while blasting enemy ships to pieces with your cannons!
  • Arsenal of Awesomeness: Arm yourself with cutlasses, pistols, muskets, throwing knives, and hand bombs. Don’t forget those sneaky pirate tricks!
  • Graphic Novel Vibes: Enjoy a unique art style that feels like you're flipping through a pirate comic book.

The game underwent several iterations throughout the 2000s and was last showcased in 2010 before vanishing for years. Now, we are excited to bring it back, combining its original glory with a series of modern improvements for today's gamers.

Just as advertised, for good and bad.

Captain Blood feels like a late 6th/early 7th console generation game lazily ported to PC, with sluggish controls, audio mixing that never feels quite right, some graphical glitching, barebones options with which to optimize what is there. Having said this, that's fine. Captain Blood delivers on its promise, definitely, except what it promised roughly 25-ish years ago hasn't aged particularly well or doesn't make much sense, these days. You'll have to deal with QTEs, janky animation, fixed cameras. And that's OK. Captain Blood is a time capsule of an era where the third person action-adventure was becoming the spectacle fighter, so it's a mix of genres typical of the time. It's cartoony, it's over the top, it's silly, it doesn't take itself seriously. It also has a pretty full-fledged demo I urge you to try out, in order to better understand if you want to take the plunge (I do think the game is a bit on the expensive side, considering what it's offering, so take that into account). I'm giving it 4/5 stars mostly because it's fun and it delivers on what it advertised, even if what it advertised didn't stand the test of time all that well. It would probably be more like a 3.5/5, to be fair. Get it when discounted, provided you know what you're getting into.

Plays like 2000s game because it is one

The game is more of a symbol of long development hell. It was meant to release on Xbox original before being delayed for the next generation 360 but then the game was cancelled. The fact this game is playable after being shelved and mostly forgotten for so long is an achievement within itself. But you shouldn't expect anything more. It's very much the kind of 3D action platform game that was popular at the time, warts and all. Don't be expecting a 2025 re-imagining of a mid 2000s game, it's just a mid 2000s game.

Revived but as an undead

I'm planning to buy this on PC once it get a discount just to have better control over the framerate because that cause some issues on the console. At its core the game plays like a beat 'em up, a very arcadish one. The controls are simple like it used to be. Fast weak attacks, slow strong attacks, option to chain them together, a ranged attack that is good only for knocking enemies down to give yourself a few seconds, and a dodge that has no invincibility but cancels anything. There is also a block but after the first stage no enemy will have blockable attacks. The most useful stuff is the execution that grants invincibility for the animation's entire duration what will save your life more than too many times. Believe it or not the game actually plays nicely and fun enough to replay it. All these quirky gameplay elements are aged good enough to call it retro. Where are the problems? At the technical side. The first thing to notice is the audio not working properly. The real issue however is the quick time events the game like to throw way too often in the gameplay. While QTE by itself is also a quirky retro thing, but it doesn't work as intended. Especially on higher difficulty and with high framerate the QTE is so fast that sometimes it is near instant (and random) other times it is extremely slow to a point it allow inputs even seconds after the event ended and still winning. Because QTE is in use a lot of times during the gameplay this makes the game rather unfair with the said technical issue. I really hope the PC version works better. If for nothing else I intend to get it for the modding but I would rather see some official patches fixing these problems. The game is playable but can cause headache if you decide to play on the higher difficulties.

Things was good. Now things is bad.

This game from 2010, that looks like it's from 2005, is at worst kinda samey and brainless, and at best pretty damn good God of War action. Story's a hot mess, it's got a lot of bugs, and you can beat it in less than 6 hours. But, if you remember a time when Capcom, Rockstar, and Konami were allowed to take risks and make new franchises held together with thumbtacks and the developer's ambitions, this will take you back in time. I think that trounces any A-list actors or perk trees they could've added. If we ever get a sequel, I want it to look exactly the same. A renaissance for the ps2 era is what we need right about now.

Arrr maty, its the mid 2000

This game is a blast from the past it plays like an Xbox360 game, I would say even older. The game is most similar to GOW with brutal finishing moves, QTE and fallen enemy dropping loot. Now stuff that some might consider bad but are "par for the course" in the right mindset and you tolerance for older game design. ➤You cant move the camera and admire the awesome art stye but the bigger problem is the combat you often will shoot or throw barrels at enemy's of screen in most cases the attacks would connect and the enemy health bar would indicate that but you cant see the destruction >:( ➤No lock on, unlike GOW it plays like Nightmare Creatures or Fighting Force you aim at the general direction and attack or throw ➤A short game, it takes up to 6h or 7h to finish, I'm not one of those gamers that need 150h long game or its automatically bad but a few more hours wouldn't hurt ➤ Sound mixing is bad at some spots the music would muffle the voices even if its set to low ➤One thing they messed up is the ship combat, not difficult but annoying to fight pretty disappointing considering it has Pirates in it ➤ The game needs a bit more exposition you can see the game was rushed the first boss gets a cutscene you know who he is and what he about, for the final boss only after checking the achievements i found out he has an name but forget about knowing anything else about him. The Good ➤The difficulty is just right on easy but there is a normal or hard mode for those who need a challenge ➤Not a fan of QTE but they are pretty forgiving in this game so they get a pass ➤The game runs well and looks good, the in game options menu is bare bones but it gets the job done. Its an 360 era game but it supports 4k and high refresh rates and no TAA, DLSS or FGR in sight ➤ Brutal execution moves, not only look they cool but look different depending on the enemy and it serves a purpose need more money execute with A or you want the enemy power weapon execute with X my favorite one with the grenade throwing enemy you snap his neck and throw his body as a grenade. Some of these would make Kratos blush. This feature kept me playing. ➤Great Art style, is has a comic book style just without the cell shading, different environments to keep things fresh. Voluptuous damsel in distress and enemy hot babe with 5 second screen time sadly 🏁Overall I would say the game is a solid 3 its gets 4 stars from me because its scratches a certain itch that most new games don't and I'm glad it got released after the longest development hell i have ever seen. Sadly as of writing this review it seems most people give up playing, GOG says I have played 7h47m and player average is 28min and the beating the final boss is an uncommon achievement. Hopefully that will change soon
