"Gazing down upon a world raging with torment and evil, the archangel Azrael sheds a tear. And where his sorrow touches, even greater destruction erupts..."

WE ARE WAITING FOR YOU, THIEF!

The dawn of the third millennium. But instead of an age of great happiness and human perfection, the earth has plunged into hellish chaos. The only hope lies in the ancient past, in the legendary energy of the Holy Grail itself - and your ability to find it.

You are a brave, new, high-technology Raptor cast into the Knight's Templar - the vast, lost, underground sanctum of the sacred cup. Your charge: retrieve this legendary chalice of the Last Supper and return its healing power to a forsaken planet.

But this is no safe sanctuary. It is a labyrinth of the mutated and deadly. To these bizarre denizens who have guarded the cup for centuries, you are just another petty thief. And they are waiting for you.

Explore over 70 hauntingly mystic environments. Gather crucial objects. Solve intelligent puzzles. And negotiate with a host of daunting characters. Though armed with the latest in high-tech weaponry and sophisticated sensors, ultimately you must survive by your strategy and skill and wits.

Your world depends upon it.

Cool adventure, but requires patience.

I bought this when it came out in the mid 1990s. It ran pretty sluggish even on higher end hardware of the time. It was a pretty resource demanding DOS game. You are probably going to run into performance issues in DOSBox as well. It's most excellent GOG is offering this DRM free now as the CD-ROM had all sorts of copy protection IIRC. First off, when you start the game, hit the F1 key and get familiar with the controls. To mouse look you hold the right mouse button and while holding the right mouse button, hold the left mouse button to move forward. You can use the arrow keys if you like. When you start the game you see a message about the room getting slow and to hit keys 1,2,1. Basically, 1 is the highest graphic detail level and 3 is the lowest. 4 is autores. 4 basically goes to low res when moving and high res when standing still. It works well, but if you like the high res mode then the 1,2,1 method works well enough. Sometimes I have to use 1,3,1. So bottom line, the engine will slow down in high res, so you lower the detail level and up it again and for some odd reason this gets the graphics performance smooth again in high res. I just use option 4 (autores) as I don't mind chunky pixels when moving. If you can get beyond the technical weirdness you have a pretty decent first person adventure game here. When the game came out, it flew under the radar (at least in my computer gaming circles), but it's just perfectly weird enough I was immediately intrigued when visiting my local Babbage's store one mid 90s Friday night. It's got dinosaurs, ghosts, dungeon pathways to explore and of course puzzles. I never finished the game, so hopefully I can now. One thing is for sure, games like this aren't made anymore. Different, very different, and I love every minute of it.

My beloved adventure game is back!

When the notification about Azrael's Tear being available popped up, I couldn't really believe my eyes, but it's there. After so many years languishing in IP hell, it's finally back. One of the most ambitious titles of the mid-90s, with plenty of weird idiosyncracies and jankiness, but a powerful, complex narrative and relatively open-ended adventure gameplay. Few games have impacted me to such a degree, and the clarity of vision coupled with the sheer ambition of its design continue to inspire me. I love it (to the point of making an entire wiki devoted specifically to the game and its story), especially the atmosphere and design. I remember hours spent dissecting it, putting together the pieces to reconstruct the story of Aeternis, enjoying the oppressive, claustrophobic atmosphere of the rotting citadel of the Templars protecting their greatest treasure, the Holy Grail. By modern standards, the gameplay will take a while getting used to, but once you get used to it, you're in for an adventure of your life. Time to make a living, thief.

Oddball adventure

This one is odd. Dismissed back then, because - of its first person movement and shooting mechanism, and brown colors - Quake clone this is not. - of its non-linear adventure and obscure puzzles - Myst clone this is not. - of its weird faux history Templars setting and story - Broken Sword this is not. - of its brand new shiny MMX hardware requirements - Tech demo this is not. If someone surprisingly STILL interested in this game, they found a very unique adventure game with tough puzzles, intelligent storyline and an atmosphere so thick you never want to return. I have the original boxed version, so two interesting trivia for you: The box has a novelette by none other than Steve Jackson (you must know this guy much too well). Not essential, but a nice backdrop for the in-game story. The superb music was composed by none other than Kerry Minnear oz Gentle Giant fame (great obscure prog rock band). Be sure to play through General MIDI and not Adlib! Excellent, but ONLY FOR THE EXPERT ADVENTURER.

Fantastic

My father gave me this game in disk format in the 90's. He couldnt finish it but thought it was intresting. When i first started playing it I kinda gave up in the first room where those lizard creatures can kill you . I put the game down for a few weeks and then decided to try agian with renewed interest. Oh boy thankfully I did. The game needs some patients getting into it with some of the cryptic puzzles ..but they are very logical and can be reasoned thru . The graphics for its time was stunning and the story was unique. Also thier are page on the floor in game that you can pick up and read ..do so and you will get more of the backround and history of the game envierment and give some more insite on your quest. It has multiple different edding which add another layer of goodness here. I highly advise you to try this game and if you like fantasy with a great stroy and graphics buy this game .It's old school magic.
