New release: Ultima 4: Quest of the Avatar

Embark on the Quest of the Avatar to become the ultimate paragon of the Eight Virtues!

Ultima 4: Quest of the Avatar is a milestone in not only the Ultima franchise, but in the Role-Playing Games genre as a whole. You start as an average character, neither a scoundrel nor a saint. After defeating the Triad of Evil (Mondain, Minax and Exodus), Sosaria has changed beyond recognition. The benevolent monarch Lord British proclaimed the Eight Virtues (Honesty, Compassion, Valor, Justice, Sacrifice, Honor, Spirituality, and Humility) as a moral foundation of the new land, united under the banner of Britannia. This time there is no ultimate bad guy you need to kill after leveling your character to the max. This time it’s different. Your quest is to become the Avatar, a real role model for the people of Britannia. Become one with the Eight Virtues with your actions and words. As you live the life of a potential hero you discover that every action you undertake influences your level in each of the Virtues. Flee from battle and your Valor decreases, overpay a blind seller and you gain Compassion points. Even in modern times the concept of Ultima 4: Quest of the Avatar is unique. Even if the graphics aged, this is a prime example of a gaming masterpiece!
The best part is that Ultima 4: Quest of the Avatar is available for FREE on GOG.com! Download it now and immerse yourself in the world of Britannia.

PirateNeilsouth: How do you save?
What are the keys?

There's probably a readme but i'm a lazy git :(
avatar
Farthest_Outpost: there is a Readme (you have to scroll down for keys)

Start menu>GOG.com>Ultima 4- Quest of the Avatar>Documents>Readme

Hope that helps!
BTW, you'll probably want to print out the keys or at least keep it open in a separate window until you've played the game quite a bit - there are a lot of them.

RafaelLopez: This is an awesome release and free like god intended. Thank you GOG.

I just hope the wait for Ultima VII is almost over.
avatar
skwerl: I would love to see an Ultima VII release natively able to run in Windows. Ultima VII still stands as my favorite game of all time.
Should they release it, it'll probably be with the support of DOSBox. Won't be "natively able", but it runs really fine on DOSBox with the right settings (dynamic core and expanded memory turned off).

Favorite game of all time here too. :-D

Full windows compatibility is but a click away, you know: http://exult.sourceforge.net/index.php

amccour: Exult is a naive-windows Ultima 7 engine port with various interface improvements. There's also some neat mods for it that add even MORE interactivity.
*That's* native Windows alright. Still, I'm kind of suspicious of a port if the real thing is already awesome and pretty much bug-free. I've heard Exult is great but not without errors.

I noticed a couple of minor graphical glitches when I played it through a couple of times three years back or so, but nothing major, I think it also prevents a couple of bugs I ran into in the original release. That and it (optionally) adds a few of the improvements from Serpent Isle - A keyring (A godsend... I remember having a bag full of just keys... Dozens of them!) and an improved character sheet to name but two.

thank you GOG

Now u have sale for U1 - U3

U4 is the awesome adventure. Very powerful !

Now u gotta bring U5 - U9. Please :)

Also don't you forget Savage Empires and Martian Dreams !

I don't know whether to make a whole thread about this or not...
Is anyone else having Ultima 4 crash right after start-up? I get the blue "Lord British" writing, but it cuts off, goes black and I get "Dosbox Dos Emulator has encountered a problem and has to close."

Anyone else?

Oh man, Martian Dreams. That and 9 are the only PC Ultimas I don't have. I even have some weird CD release of Savage Empires that I never knew existed.

The Worlds of Ultima games were really cool. We need them on here.

Anyway, with regards to Exult, it has some bugs, but it has fewer bugs than Ultima 7 by itself. I don't recommend using paper-dolling in Black Gate, though, unless you want Burly Man Sparks.

The keyring mod is great, though, as is this... I found some mod that made fishing poles properly usable, as well as some other object creation stuff. It should be on the main site.

Basically Ultima 7 is a great game but the engine was really poorly coded/optimized in a lot of ways and even running it in native dos you'll hit slowdown because of this.

I had a similar problem running it in Boxer on my Mac. Make sure its opening "ultima.com" not "avatar.exe" or "title.exe".

Yeah, it's running ultima.com. Weird. I'll have to try and reinstall.

deelee74: EA released it as freeware a long time ago. They have had it up on their ultimaforever.com site for a while too. They are using the most loved game in the series to drum up interest in the whole Ultima world again. It's rumored that Bioware is finishing up a sequel to Ultima Online.
avatar
DeadlyRamon: A sequel to Ultima Online isn't as exciting as a sequel to Ultima 9.
Sequel implies Ultima 9 was actually an Ultima game.

(oh snap)

;)

Once again., Thank you. I know you can get it free elsewhere for a while now, but that's beside the point. You didn't leave it out and just tell us that we could get it for free at some other site. You took the time to give it to us.
Thanks

Upon GoG getting U4:QotA, I did some research and found out two very neat factoids!

1) Both U4:QotA & the Bard's Tale (original) were released in 1985, and both have a land named Skara Brae in the respective games.

2) Both Skara Brae's were inspired by a real place on Earth! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Skara_Brae

anjohl: When I wsa a kid, this game was *always* in Nintendo Power magazine, and it looked magical. I never had the chance to prove it...this is such great news! Also, I always pronounced it "Quest of the Ave-Eh-Tuhr". Anyone else do the same?
avatar
amccour: The NES port of U4 is kind of terrible. They took out the conversation. Talking to NPCs is like half of the game.
Well, thank god for this GOG release then!

Nomad_Soul: So, putting aside game mechanics and trying to gun for a particular starting class, what virtue/class do you guys end up with when trying to answer the questions as naturally and honestly as possible? There's some random elements to it, but it's still fun to ask!
This is quite touch call. I have tried many times, and I end up differently. Those questions are really hard and there is no right answer for them.

Tried just once, and I ended up between Spirituality and Sacrifice. And Spirituality was my final call (ranger)

Btw, there is good guide at Gamefaqs, which gives LOTS of info about all things in Ultima IV.

Selling of this one for free is a magnanimous act and shall not be forgotten!

Giving this one away in a GOG package is truly a virtuous act of GOG as it is also a virtuous act of EA/Bioware and the site Ultima Forever to let us enjoy The Quest of the Avatar for free.
Hopefully now we can go on to V, VI, and VII.

I think you're right about the improvements in Exult.

Exult is cool too because it was ported to systems like the Sony PSP for the win! :-)
