GOG.com Swings Into Spring with a Site Update And A Free Game!

Last time the site went down (for the end of beta) we gave our users a free game. While we're not going to claim that this will always happen, it's true that we have another one for you guys today. But before we go into that, let's tell you about the exciting new features that we've added to GOG.com:

As announced during our presentation on CD Projekt Days Spring Conference, the update adds two highly requested by users improvements: a new downloader application and personal messages. The new downloader has been made from scratch by GOG.com developers and features multithreaded downloads for performance, automatic error checking and runs only when user is downloading something from GOG.com. The downloader is not a client application and is optional to use, although recommended for downloading big games, like i.e. The Witcher 2.

Personal Messaging, the second biggest feature of the Spring Update, is a combination of instant and private messaging. The system will have fully configurable privacy settings and just like the downloader is completely optional. Aside of those two changes, the team has introduced many various improvements to make the user experience even better - those include improved checkout system, update to work flawlessly on newest browsers and easier to use coupon system.

Finally, as the cherry on top for the Spring Update Sundae (man, we could really go for some ice cream), the we released Dragonsphere, free to all users. The game is an adventure point-and-click title by famous MicroProse and features excellent story, clever puzzles and simple yet appealing graphics. “It’s easy to lose yourself in this fresh, engaging game” according to PC Gamer. This adds to our already existing catalog of free titles, bringing the total up to five.

Have fun with the new features and enjoy your new free game (in a little bit)!

It shouldn't be......that file is verified by TWO scanners as virus free and working status is certified by me.

I must have accidently hit a link and downloaded that. Second time was a charm, though. It works now.

Devils4dvocate: This file worked! I still dont understand a thing, but it worked! Thank you so much, sir.

GameRager: It must be the coding of the zip file hosting site or something that dislikes IE8 for some reason.
Or IE8 for some reason doesn't like the coding of the zip file hosting site. ;)

Ok you can probably get a bit of sarcasm there, though I admit IE8 was an improvement from the previous though IE9 is better still with standards compliance. I just use firefox and chrome and no problems.

Still I had a quick play with IE can't see at a glance why it is doing this. I could packet sniff the transfer to get a bit more of an in depth view but I just can't be bothered for a browser I don't fancy. Up to the GOG devs I guess.

Just wanted to thank GameRager for putting the file up elsewhere. My direct-from-GOG downloaded zip didn't unzip properly (right file size, etc) but yours did. Yay!

Same here, got it working again in 30 seconds after battling the zip file error last night.
172
Great stuff gog! I especially look forward to the instant messaging application, and of course playing dragonsphere.

I keep getting "bad zip header" when I try to extract the new downloader with IZArc.
I've re-downloaded it a few times now with no luck. Downloaded with it Firefox 4.0.1.

EDIT: Sweet someone posted a good copy on mediafire. thanks :)

That's the same problem I got here. Solved using GameRager link. Thanks, mate.
If that minds I use win7 and ff4.

I'm not able to download the zip directly from GoG either, and I'm using IE9. I've also tested with FF (v3.6.3 - it's been there a while..) with the same result - only 507 KiB is actually downloaded. My box is running Vista64 business ed.

I've downloaded the zip hosted on MediaFire, though - thanks, GameRager =)

one more hurrah for gameranger, mediafire link worked for me after "invalid" message on GOG zipfile. not sure if IE8 was the culprit though -- had both Chrome and IE8 open at the time, don't remember which i went through. anyone had success unzipping the downloader through IE8?

Thanks for all the thanks.....I do hope Gog fixes this though, but am glad to be of help in the meantime.

It seems to be fixed now - the entire zip is downloaded without any problems.

The downloader inside the zip file is a sligtly more recent build (v0.9.0.1372 compared to v0.9.0.1336) than the one who kept failing (for me) to download, but unless the previous archive contained some byte sequence that triggered some anti-virus app somewhere, that shouldn't make any difference..

Yep they fixed it finally. Hurrah for Gog! :)

Haha, I just downloaded a backup for the PS:T installer and it saved in a folder called "placement_torment". You guys might want to fix that sometime!

Otherwise I'm giving the thing a workout right now, seems to be OK although it seems switching file downloads during compilation is a bad idea.

edit: also gabriel knight 1's download reports as corrupted after about 95%??? better fill a report there (tried it twice)

Destro: Forced browser cache refresh (ctrl+f5 few times) should have fixed that. Can you please post a screenshot showing this icon problem?
Hey Destro, sorry for the late reply (haven't been on the forums in a while), but the problem looks to be resolved now. Thanks.

An update: I went from 1-2 MB/s to 3-5 MB/s with the new downloader from GameRager's link, so it must be working. It IS better than before if you are using the old Save as ... option. So far, everything looks to be Ok so I recommend it.
