Not bad but too short

The game is good, with a good atmosphere, dark locations, and mediocre puzzles. The graphics are a mix of old and new, but still worth seeing. Since I don't care much for graphics anyway and the story and gameplay are more important to me, I would recommend the game. The game is short at about 3 hours, but for the price, you can't go wrong; it's worth a treat.

Short, but worth the experience.

The game is only about 2.5 hours long, but it is an extremely detailed work of macabre art. Very enjoyable, immersive, and poetic.

Looks cool, gameplay bit lacking

I do enjoy walking sims, but this one I feel is bit beyond me. I'd be lying if I said I understood the story at all. Gameplay is essentially "you found square peg, now run around to find the square hole to put it in", all the time. Interactable stuff has shimmering effect on it so they're fairly hard to miss. I can't deny rolling my eyes a bit when a character crawling on the ground asked me to find a thing he lost countless eons ago, only to find it on the ground about 20 meters away, it wasn't even hidden. Visuals are nice, if a bit too "tonemapped"/contrasty at times, as the dark ambient occlusions becomes so crushed/chonky it looks like things have thick black outlines. Audio and voice acting fit the game well. The feeling of dread and isolation is great. That said, listening to the dialogue is mandatory. When the characters talk to you, you're cemented in place, you can look around but not move. Some dialogue goes on-and-on-and-on how they're suffering for eons, things are horrible, but cosmic horrors are worse etc, while you're locked in listening, just standing there knowing what they want because you saw it just a moment ago. All in all, it's decent game-ish experience. If you enjoy Zdzisław Beksiński's art, you'll definitely enjoy the visuals here. Maybe skip it if you're not really into walking sims.

Not bad, but terribly short

In terms of visual and atmosphere this walking sim is highly distinct. The story, if you piece it together, is also fairly interesting. On the other hand, the game is almost criminally short and can be finished in very little time. And as a walking sim there is very little actual gameplay. Conclusion: Buy on discount, or go play Scorn for a greater experience.

The visuals and atmosphere blew my mind!

4.5/5 ✩ 7.5/10 Some spoilers in review as to who your character is meant to represent, play first before reading. Two tips for 2 of the puzzles further down in the puzzle section that I would recommend you take a look at to not run into the same head scratching I did. - This blew my mind! The colors and artwork was so surreal, contorted, full of pain and suffering but oh so beautiful to behold. The atmosphere and immersion, the music and sounds, everything was a visual journey and I was rather mesmerized despite the grotesqueness of it all. The story is told through everything around you and a few log journals along the way, but mainly through everything happening around you. its clear from the start that you are in 'hell' or some underworld, with the usual references along the way to this universe. Also the usual pyramid all seeing eye later in that is frequently tied to death and spirituality and reawakening . Whether you believe in gods or not, the ending had me sit with my mouth open once you really realise who you are supposed to represent. I am not religious at all but the story here is great, scary and evil, full of suffering and pain, worship and sacrifice, but the philosophical views that to appreciate the good, to be happy, love and know pleasure, one must first feel pain and suffering to understand what is missing. I really loved some of these things throughout even though I dont think it realistic and not believing in this way. There is no action or combat. Its a walking sim with incredible sights along the way, some light puzzles here and there and some locations to watch their awsome animations! Take it all in, dont rush, look at the moving beings and take in the settings. To add to all of this, this game has an incredible photo mode option for screenshots! I spent countless hours on this as I love taking pics and editing. I used to live in Reshade in a previous game I played so this was a huge bonus for me to play around with :D I dont know if its a bug or a thing they let be because it can be used in cool and fun ways in photomode, but the various corpses and such would slowly lift off. Which I quickly picked up on and positioned myself and camera to take some fun scenes with and was often kicking corpses around to place them where I wanted :D There are not a lot lying around to use for this purpose, and only in some angles if you are close enough, but I had a blast with this 'feature' in some locations and backgrounds xD. I loved how the death/respawn system worked, pretty cool tbh. And that bit tentacle dude in the small room that grabs you like that, I was just blown away by all these little happenings left and right and hardly knew where to look because there is so much to take in everywhere :o ═══════ ⓘ I had a fatal error and other crashes on startup right after install at first using proton (via Heroic), but reinstalling and using system wine worked. 🧩🤔 The first puzzle right at the beginning can soft lock your progress if you do it in the wrong order, which I managed to do. You need to find three brains total, for the canon and the big bug thing to move it out of the way. But if you insert the first two you find into the bug and skip the canon/didnt see that one yet, you cant take them out again. And you need one of those first two brains for the canon to get to the third brain and then remove the inserted one again so you have all 3 for the bug. So use one in the canon first, or you will need to restart the game. This is no matter in this case since its at the start and it takes 1 min to run and gather the things you have now already done once and know. But that was one small thing that took a lot of time for me to riddle out why it wouldnt work. Another puzzle later in which has had many wondering if it was bugged, me also, is the one where you need to pull out the maggots from the corpse. Its not as simple as that! It is a pattern sequence you need to memorize and pull them out in the right order. ═══════ Since this game is so frequently compared to and discarded because 'its not Scorn', I made sure to play Necrophosis first for an unbiased experience. -Edit I personally prefer Necrophosis but each their own preference and oppinion. But I dont think they can be compared at all, they are each their own game and good in their own ways. ═══════ Save file in local. Keybinds can be rebound. No analytics or other calling out, ty for this. Worth full price imo. 🐧 Arch Linux EndeavourOS
