This game developer has a very bad reputation in regards to the amount of bugs they leave in "finished" games. I for my self will wait for 1-2 years, before buying this game, so that most of the game-breaking bugs get fixed. I came to this conclusion based on my early purchase of Pathfinder where I encountered a game breaking bug after spending good 30 hours in the game. I never finished the game thanks to that.
Firstly, the good things:
- The graphics and world detail are amazing. The level of detail - especially for characters - is impressive, yet with reduced details it runs well enough on a laptop with an onboard GPU.
- I enjoy the story itself. It has lots of nice details and some good humor (though be prepared to read tons of text). Without spoilers, there is definitely an issue with the ending that partially doesn’t make sense. Right, unless you play through as the bloody killer , i can get only only 200 points in dogmatic and the ending suck.
The bad thing that ruins everything:
- I enjoyed the gameplay until Act 2. The difficulty was somewhat balanced: I started with “darling‑custom” (NPC modifier +10%, enemies HP +100%). I switched to “unfair” at Act 2.
Even without trying hard - just reading skills, doing side quests, and opening the map before attacking the main quest - the fights became extremely easy. They rarely go over two character moves in the first round! What was fun initially, turned frustrating when even bosses could do nothing, especially with a buffer character always going in the queue first.
- Fights - the core game element - became repetitive and boring until the very end. Even the last boss died in 1.5 rounds!
In many games you can have an OP build, but as I said before, in Rogue Trader you don’t need to do any effort, the build became broken itself and too fast.
- Sadly that limits replayability. You’d better watch the alternative ending on YouTube than redo countless 0.15‑round fights just to check them.
In summary:
Extremely bad balancing kills everything nice about this game. Play once and move on.
Baldur's Gate 3 is a masterpiece - Rogue Trader mops the floor with it AND craps on Starfield.
Finally a Warhammer 40,000 RPG that lives up to the source material.
It does feel familiar to anyone who played Wrath of the Righteous - with the major improvement being they finally ditched the terrible Command & Conquer-style realtime with pause combat in favor of turn-based tactical combat, the only way to make an RPG.
The setting is what sells this game, and it nails WH40k. Combat is satisfying, character builds are complex and game mechanics are hard to master. This is not for RPG newbies.
My *only* gripe is the graphics. The engine Owlcat uses is the same as in Wrath of the Righteous - which is only servicable, no match for BG3's. With a better engine and graphics it would have been even better. Not a fan of the cartoonish portraits either.
Bugs are present but unlike the "professional" game reviews write none are game-breaking but rather minor nuisances.
I play on the second lowest difficulty because I have only little experience with CRPGs. KOTOR 1+2 and Fallout 1+2 are the games I played the most, but I also enjoyed Pillars of Eternity.
So I was excited for this game, not only because I am a huge Warhammer 40k fan.
And in the beginning the game was really fun. leveled up my characters and found some better gear while following an interesting story for 10 hours and combat was fair. It was not super easy but also not brutally difficult until I got to the boss of the Act 1 and that boss just kills my crew in seconds.
I have no idea how you can overlook something like this but the whole design of the boss fight is total nonsense.
You have no cover, the boss just sucks up damage like it's nothing and like I said, kills your crew in a few turns while calling in reinforcements.
This absolute nonsense and total unfair and neesd to be redesigned from ground up.
If that is not patched, I will never buy a game from Owlcat Games ever again.
The game causes audio popping that will not go away as long as the game is open. It even casues this to happen on other audio sources such as discord or a broswer. As soon as I close the game the popping will go away.
