《Vampire: The Masquerade® - Bloodlines™ 2 - Santa Monica Memories》
A very solid game. On Linux, had only minor framerate issues when exiting a building (under Heroic) and one forced reload (clipped through a building and got stuck). Combat and gameplay are surprisingly fun, at least on hard, and the story was told well, with a satisfying conclusion.
I removed 1-star because 1) the flashbacks can break the overall flow of gameplay, especially early on (the later ones are better) and 2) the game needs more content midgame, more sidequests etc. Seattle itself feels a bit underutilized. Still, had a great time overall, 8/10.
As I said, I am not sure what people expect from this game. It was always going to be very different from the other titles in the VtM world. It is true that it is not like the first game and that it follows a more linear story, but I think it is a great addition to the series. The art, the main characters, and the storyline are all fantastic. My suggestion is to give it a try; you might be pleasantly surprised.
Let me preface this by saying, I don't believe this is a perfect game. Quite far from it, actually. But it is a good game that tells a competent story in a visually compelling setting. The combat is a bit lackluster, and here's some advice: play on easy and just embrace the power fantasy. There's even a dedicated difficulty setting for this called "Casual", so lean into it, embrace your inner casual, and tear through everything in front of you. It's the best way to go. Once you do that, the visually appealing combat starts to work in the game’s favor, and it becomes a smoother, more enjoyable experience overall.
The tagged on roleplaying system feels like it's there mostly because the game needs to tick the "RPG" box. It really is an action game pretending to be an RPG, and you know what, there's a certain allure to that, at least for me. My advice is to try a more "canon" experience: a Nomad Tremere. But feel free to experiment, this just seems like the most sensible option from what I can gather from the lore.
You know, looking through this review page, and I’ll admit much of my review is a response to the overwhelmingly negative opinions here, it’s easy to forget that good games can simply exist. They don’t have to be flawless or revolutionary to be worth playing. Review scores are supposed to represent a spectrum, but they rarely do, and judging by this game’s review page, this one is no exception, lol.
So yes, this game gets a 5 out of 5. Not because it’s perfect, but because that’s the only way to say “yes” anymore. Anything less might as well be a “no”, and I think this one deserves better than that.
Thank you for reading. :)
Game is great at making you feel powerful. Characters are great and I'm really enjoying the story.
Open world is pretty but lacks depth, not enough minor characters to talk. Very happy with the purchase. Game glues me to the chair every time I start it which didn't happen in over 10 years.
ABC
For me it's not a bad game, I'm enjoying it. I knew what to expect from it and that it wouldn't be like the first installment (the developer clearly communicated that). The main thing is that they fix what needs fixing.
I finished the game and it was great fun from start to finish. The ability to unlock skills from different clans and combine them in combat is fantastic. I recommend unlocking the Lasombra passive skill so you don’t take damage while feeding :)
