由Cavedog Entertainment首席设计师Chris Taylor主导开发，《横扫千军》是一款即时策略（RTS）游戏。本作最初于1997年9月30日发售，这款游戏同时也是有史以来第一款拥有3D单位与地形的即时策略游戏。游戏拥有两个扩展包：于1998年4月30日推出的《核心危机》，以及于两个月后的1998年6月30日推出的《战斗策略》。在《横扫千军》推出时，当时游戏的最低电脑配置要求还是奔腾100 MHz处理器以及16MB内存。当然那只是针对1997年的电脑规格的要求，现代的设备早已大大超出当时的推荐配置，但考虑到此版游戏使用了更新后的游戏引擎，我们推荐玩家使用达到至少1 GHz处理器以及512MB内存配置的设备来游玩。
在遥远的未来，一个被称为核心（Core，“集体意识库”的缩写）的中央化人类与人工智能组织统治者全宇宙。凭借核心超乎想象的科技与经济发展，人类已经定居银河系中的绝大多数星球，全宇宙的居民享受着持久的和平与繁荣。但是，一项允许人类意识转移到机器躯体内的革命性科技打破了原有的平衡，这种被称为“复刻”的手段理论上能够赋予人类永恒的生命。当核心宣布法令以“公共安全“为理由强制要求全人类进行“复刻”，由银河系边缘地带的殖民地（旋臂这个名字也来源于此）组成的叛军势力便揭竿而起，旋臂的成员们拒绝放弃自己的身体并加入核心的机器意识。双方展开了一场持续4000年的战争，旋臂方面使用量产型的克隆体来操作战争载具，而核心阵营则通过不断复制嵌入人类意识的微型芯片来操作己方阵营的机器。

- 细致入微的刺激战役将聚焦核心与旋臂阵营的领袖，也就是指挥官。在故事开始的时候，旋臂与核心阵营都需要想法设法守护主角的母星并一步步走向战争的转折点，在各个星球与月球（使用银河之门进行超光速移动）上展开一系列的战斗之后，主角们将对敌人的母星发起最后的总攻：旋臂的牧原天女星或者是核心阵营在主核星系的人造母星“脑世界”。在游戏中，玩家们的任务目标包括保护关键建筑或区域、占领不停游走的敌方单位或者是单纯全歼敌方单位。在完成特定的任务或事件以推动战役发展后，玩家将获得更加强大的单位与武器。
- 单人遭遇战以及完整的多人游戏支持，玩家们将能够尽情观战或者是加入战斗，还可以组队分享资源、情报以及单位。
- 富有科幻色彩的先进军械库，其中包括镭射、能量机枪（EMG）、星爆导弹，电浆炮弹、闪电脉冲、瘫痪枪以及战术核弹头。
- 例如重力、潮汐以及风向在内的多样化因素将影响特定武器类型的效率，或者是强化资源生产。

AMAZING!
Just how I remembered playing as a kid! One of the all time best RTS games. I wish there was more of the Total Annihilation games on here I would buy them.

Best RTS game ever
This game is one of the best things I've ever played! I remember buying it on a CD many years ago, and boy do I still remember the awesome gameplay. I completed both official campaigns and later played the expansion - the core contingency. The gameplay consisted of your classic RTS style battlefield view where you command the units from above. Typically you would start with the commander unit and begin building structures like solar collectors, metal extractors, unit plants and defensive buildings. Later on you gained access to better factories, allowing you to build more advanced units. There were many unit types to choose from - vehicles, robots, ships, aircraft and even hovercraft in the expansion. You could literally choose any playstyle you wanted to defeat your opponent. One thing I missed is that the game didn't have any research tree available. New technologies were automatically available on each new mission. The game also featured multiplayer support, where each player would have access to full tech tree from the start. Add to that, there were later a number of community additions created that made the game even more spicy. If you're serious about playing this game in multiplayer be sure to give the TAUCP (total annihilation unit compilation pack) a try, as it features hundreds of new awesome units.

My Favorite RTS of all time.
I won't claim this is the best RTS ever. I haven't played them all. But it is my favorite. I played more than any other. It was way ahead of it's time. The 3D units, terrain with elevation that matters, and the ballistic modelling of shot trajectory made it a big leap over bitmap and sprite games. Battles are just a chaotic blast with rounds exploding everywhere. Also ahead of it's time for higher resolution support. This supports my widescreen at native resolution, while contemporaries like the original Starcraft are stuck at 640x480. The campaign isn't the best. I played it once. The real fun was multiplayer, where I spent a lot of time with friends. These days I still fire up an occasional skirmish against the computer. It holds up.

One of my favorite game
I remember playing the demo like crazy, I bought the game a bit later and continued playing it for years. I then bought it here on GoG and played it on my Mac from time to time until I had to update OS X to version 10.15 ;(. I'm really sad that I can't play it anymore on my work machine.
