Thief II - The Metal Age Review
Step back into the shadows as master thief Garrett in the sequel to the Dark Project. After the Trickster's defeat you return to your usual activities, only to draw the ire of the corrupt Sheriff Gorman Truart and of the Mechanists, led by Father Karras. As you delve deeper into the story you must play the hero again to save the City from a sinister plot. The Metal Age expands on the first game in terms of level design, artificial intelligence and gameplay mechanics. Each mission has a set of story and loot objectives depending on the chosen difficulty level. Gameplay involves using the game's sound, light and shadow mechanics to your advantage, outsmarting enemies and gathering loot. Tools of the craft include a variety of arrow types, lockpicks, potions and new additions, such as the Scouting Orb or the Flash Mine. The Builder's Children, created by Karras, offer players a new challenge and incapacitating them requires different tactics. Despite using the same Dark Engine, there are obvious graphical improvements, with levels being far more complex and rich in detail; better textures extend to enemies and items as well. The sound design is the crown jewel in a game where patience and listening are key elements. Good voice acting complements a solid script. In addition, The Metal Age abandons the supernatural undertones of its predecessor to offer players objectives centered more on thieving and less on tomb raiding. In conclusion, for those who played Thief: The Dark Project, the choice is obvious: The Metal Age retains the quality of the first game in terms of storyline, gameplay and atmosphere. It is an example of what a good sequel should be. As a bit of trivia, Looking Glass Studios were working on a Gold edition of this game before being closed. How's that for a twist of the dagger?
