You play as the titular Bard, a roguish, manipulative and lewd songster whose priorities in life are the acquisition of material wealth and carnal pleasures. The Bard's pretty sarcastic by nature, but you get to decide just how scathing he is by selecting 'Nice' or 'Sarky' responses. Watch out you don't get too cocky though; folk you've upset may come back to haunt you.
During his raucous adventures, the Bard recruits a motley band of eccentrics and misfits to help in his ignoble cause. Enemies can be defeated using traditional or magical weapons and you can also use the Bard's dulcet tones to summon creatures. If you're tired of saving humankind or bored of games that take themselves a bit too seriously, The Bard's Tale could very well be for you.

Worked once, had a blast......game hasn't worked since. Crashes, freezes, my screen goes nuts with a spectrum of colours, and the buzzing sound, omg.....I am finding that more and more often, GOG Games are crashing, and I am now starting to transition back to physical media, even going as far as buying a retro computer for older games, because at least I know that they will work.
I always loved this game when I played it on the C64 in those days in the 80s. So I was looking forward to the PC adaption on GOG. But the game was an absolute disappointment:
First, it sticks on a black screen before you can see the menu. If you try to use the task manager to abort and restart it you get the next surprise: you cannot see the task manager because the screen is still black. So you have to remember where there is the button to restart or switch off the computer. If you try to start the game once more afterwards the game starts - sometimes.
I did not try the new version of Bard's Tale but started the original version. Of course I knew that it is always a problem to play an old game on a modern system. But here you must be aware of possible sudden crashes when you are out in a dungeon. As you cannot save the game when you are outside the adventurer's guild you lose everything in that case. Seeing this and the really bad control of movements makes me say: I cannot recommend the game although it has been very good in former times.
There are many excellent old games on GOG. This one is not.
To say this game is completely joyless would be a lie. The conversations between the Narrator and the Bard can actually be very funny, but really, that and the songs are about all there is to enjoy in here.
I can't be nice about this game. It looks and sounds very good, but the gameplay backing it is terrible. To put it mildly, this is a game that is so bad, I actually found myself actively finding things to do to NOT play this game. I recommend it to absolutely no one, and wish I had not bothered to add it to my collection.
