Lovingly restored, not perfect yet
As someone who played Syberia back in the 2000s, this remaster hit me right in the nostalgia. The developers did a great job refreshing the visuals - the in-game graphics look clean and detailed without losing the original atmosphere. The audio is another highlight: those familiar ambient sounds, voice actors and melancholic melodies immediately transported me back to Kate Walker's first journey. I also appreciated that some of the puzzles were slightly adjusted - it makes the flow smoother while still keeping the charm and logic of the original design. That said, there are a few things that could use a patch. The facial animations aren't nearly as expressive as they were in The World Before - it's a shame, since the motion capture work there was excellent and could have been reused. Some of the upscaled cutscenes are jarring or look "buttery," and the background music tends to loop too often, rather than playing only during key moments like in the original version. Despite these issues, I'm glad Syberia has been brought back with such care. It's a bittersweet feeling knowing that Microids has closed their Paris studio earlier this year - it makes me worry we might never get a Syberia 2 Remaster. But for now, this is a beautiful way to revisit one of adventure gaming's most poetic worlds.
