Linux + Lutris + SMAC
At this time, on Ubuntu 20, it runs out of the box. It will give you the original experience on a modern monitor. The only problem I am having is finding out what version or patches GoG applied and what I need to do in order to apply patches and mods, in order to render the map in a 1:1 pixel resolution.

I want to play Alien Crossfire. It keeps blowing up every time I try. Fix this, and the rating goes up to 5.

Brilliant!
This, Civ 3 and Imperialism 2 were what started my long standing love of turn based strategy games, and of the three, Alpha Centauri stood head and shoulders above the rest. Incredible game.

No Alien Crossfire?
SMAC is a classic and is right on my list of 'to buy' especially at this price. Still, I'm irritated by the lack of SMAX to go along with it.
